One of my favorite hikes, Don't Miss. Split Rock Loop Trail is a 1.9 mile loop trail located near the north entrance that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. Although easy it allows you the opportunity to venture off to see some amazing formations, great photo shots and overall great time! The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.

Split Rock Loop Trail in Joshua Tree National Park is a moderate loop trail that we’ve been really enjoying lately. We find that it’s not as trafficked as other trails in the park (like Hidden Valley or Barker Dam), but offers similar beauty (think rock formations, Joshua Trees, and incredible views).
This is one of my favorite trails, the open horizon of boulders can never fail to amaze me.
If you are looking for a moderate to easy hike with fewer crowds this is the one. Its closer to the North Entrance and gets far less use than Barker Dam and Hidden Valley so its perfect for those busy weekend and holidays when the line at the west entrance is long and the parking lots at the other trailheads are full. The loop is approximately 2 miles with not much elevation gain. The rock formations and views are second to none and you are much more likely to find that desert solitude you came for here.

Splits Rock’s name is self explanatory, and this massive rock is situated at the picnic area and trailhead of the 2.3 mile Split Rock Loop (not far from Twentynine Palms). A distinct crack runs from top to bottom, and you can explore the cave on the backside for yourself along with numerous other rock formations along the entire trail.
