Joshua Tree National Park

It’s probably the reason you came and yes, it is worth paying admission and going into the park. The National Park has a great website with information about visiting the park and you will be offered a paper map when you enter - take it. You can also stop at the Visitors Centers in Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms for great tips from rangers who know the park inside and out. Park visitation has doubled over the past decade; on weekends and holidays the West Entrance often has long lines and parking for popular hikes fills up, so try arriving early or use the North Entrance if visiting at peak times. National park admission is currently $30 per car and is good for 7 days. You can also purchase an annual interagency pass, good at all National Parks and federal land, for $80; it lasts 12 months. If you purchase a pass in advance it can save a little time at the park entrances. The park is open 24/7 so if you enter early or late you can purchase a pass or show it when exiting the park. Cellular service is limited in the park so plan to download maps before entering the park or to use paper maps. There is no running water in the park so bring plenty of drinking water; "vaulted" outhouse style toilets are available inside the park. We love hiking and have recommended a few easy to moderate hikes but you don’t need to hike to admire the beauty of the park; the views are stunning along the main road; just don’t forget you are on the main road:)
Hidden Valley is one of our favorite short hikes inside the National Park. It’s a one mile loop through amazing rock formations and Joshua Trees; it is great for all ages. There are many picnic areas spread out near the parking areas at the trail head with cool rocks to explore; we often don’t even go on the official trail because the views and the rocks to explore in the picnic area are so amazing. Because this is a popular place, be aware that the parking lot can reach capacity on weekends and holidays, plan to arrive early if you are visiting at those times.

Explore the rocky desert landscape of Joshua Tree on the Barker Dam Trail, an easy 1.1 mile (1.8 km) loop. Wander through Joshua Tree's iconic monzogranite boulders, the namesake Joshua Trees, and past the historic Barker Dam. Visit a rock art site and experience human history from a respectful distance. Encounter rock climbers, spot wildlife big and small, scramble over boulders, and walk along desert washes. Catch a glimpse of the far-off San Gorgonio Mountain. View the plant life of the Mojave Desert, including Joshua Trees, creosote, Mojave Yucca, pinon pines, and more. This trail is probably the most popular in the park. If you are visiting on weekend or holidays plan on getting in early (or late) as the parking lot can fill up. Even on a peak weekend it is amazing how quickly you can find desert solitude just a few steps off the main trial or around a rock outcropping. Try not to let the crowds bum you out- plan ahead or choose a different hike on a busy day and appreciate the fact that millions of people are getting outside for a hike to enjoy the beauty of the natural world.

Ryan Mountain is a moderate out and back hike to a round summit at the center of Joshua Tree National Park. The 3 mile round trip trail climbs 1,050 feet up a dirt trail with numerous stone steps. The sun-exposed trail crowns a 5,457-foot mountain with impressive panoramic views of the jumbled rock formations and Joshua Tree forests that surround the peak. The summit of Ryan Mountain is the best place to get a top-down view of the heart of the Park.

Lost Horse Mine is a hardy relic of the California Gold Rush era and one of the best-preserved mines found in Joshua Tree National Park. The Lost Horse Mine, which produced more than 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver (worth approximately $5 million today) between 1894 and 1931. When the story of the Lost Horse Mine is told, it sounds like a western campfire tale: gun slinging cowboys, cattle rustlers, horse thieves, the lure of gold, and a sticky-fingered miner. While the mine is definitely the highlight of this hike, there are other gems to be discovered along the way. Lost Horse Mine is accessed either by hiking the entire loop around Lost Horse Mountain (6.7 miles), or by an easier out-and-back hike directly to the mine (4 miles round trip). The most challenging part of this hike is found on the full loop, climbing up the southeastern aspect of the mountain. The signage at the parking lot indicates that you should hike the loop clockwise, but some have suggested that hiking counter-clockwise is more enjoyable. That way you get the less inspiring wash slog done right away and save the highlights for the latter half of the hike. You can get more information and a map from rangers as well as abundant information about the hike on the internet.

This popular scenic overlook perched on the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, provides panoramic views of the Coachella Valley and is well worth the 20-minute drive from Park Boulevard down Keys View Road. If you want to get off the beaten path the Covington Flat area is for you. It is a much less visited part of the National Park with no entrance gate or improvements just a dusty desert road leading high into the little San Bernardino Mountains. You will see some of the largest Joshua Trees in the Park here and very few if any other people. The Covington Crest trail is approximately 12 bumpy miles (35-45 minutes) from the last bit of pavement. The trail is 1.6 miles with stunning views of the Coachella Valley below at the end. Out-and-back its a 3.2mile round trip that is mostly flat making a nice easy stretch of the legs after the drive. High clearance vehicles are not necessary but recommended, bring plenty of water and don't expect cellular phone service or roadside assistance.

If you are looking for a moderate to easy hike with fewer crowds this is the one. Its closer to the North Entrance and gets far less use than Barker Dam and Hidden Valley so its perfect for those busy weekend and holidays when the line at the west entrance is long and the parking lots at the other trailheads are full. The loop is approximately 2 miles with not much elevation gain. The rock formations and views are second to none and you are much more likely to find that desert solitude you came for here.

This is a small hike with big views and few people. Indian Cove is a separate enclave not connected to the central part of the National Park making it a great option for busy days in the National Park. Indian Cove is located between the town of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. The nature trail is accessed by driving through the Indian Cove National Park campground approximately 4 miles from the highway. There are few of the iconic Joshua Trees in this area, but the rock formations and views across the valley are unparalleled. The trail is a loop that is less than a mile, but there is plenty of exploring and rock scrambling to do near the trail head to make it worth the visit.

Dog (and people) Friendly Hikes Outside of the National Park

A lot of our guests bring furry friends so we wanted to share some places we take our dog. Dogs are allowed in the National Park, but only leashed, within 100 ft. of roadways, campsites, and picnic areas. In national parks, the native wildlife has priority. It is not possible to go for a trail hike with your dog inside the National Park.
Also know as Section 6, this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land is managed by the County of San Bernardino as the Desert View Conservation Area (easily found on google maps.) It is a great spot close to town for a hike when you don’t want to go all the way into the National Park. Additionally dogs and mountain bikes are allowed on the trails, unlike trails inside the National Park. You’ll see boulders, Joshua Trees and native wildlife. The views at sunset are stunning and it is usually uncrowded. There is no fee for entry. Keep in mind the gates are locked from sunset to sunrise.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Noah Purifoy was one of Los Angeles’s most successful artists. But in 1989, he moved to the desert and began work on his outdoor museum. On 10 acres of land, he crafted more than 10 acres' worth of sculptures, assemblages, and installations mostly from found material. The works have mostly been left to the elements since Purifoy passed away in 2004, but the weather-beaten look just adds to the charm. It has to be seen to be believed.
