If you want to get off the beaten path the Covington Flat area is for you. It is a much less visited part of the National Park with no entrance gate or improvements just a dusty desert road leading high into the little San Bernardino Mountains. You will see some of the largest Joshua Trees in the Park here and very few if any other people. The Covington Crest trail is approximately 12 bumpy miles (35-45 minutes) from the last bit of pavement. The trail is 1.6 miles with stunning views of the Coachella Valley below at the end. Out-and-back its a 3.2mile round trip that is mostly flat making a nice easy stretch of the legs after the drive. High clearance vehicles are not necessary but recommended, bring plenty of water and don't expect cellular phone service or roadside assistance.
