Surrounded by building that all go back to the 18th century and to Frederick the Great. You can see the National Opera House, the main building of the Humboldt University and the Law Faculty building, which used to be a library. In the middle of the square the Nazis burnt book on the night of May 10th, 1933, shortly after they came to power. There is a very impressive monument for that even called the empty library by the Israeli artist Micha Ulman.

Over 20,000 works including those of the so-called subversive writers including Karl Marx, Berthold Brecht and Thomas Mann were set alight and destroyed.
