This is Brunelleschi's second church in Florence. It's a hidden gem, sitting in a shabby chic piazza in the Oltrarno district. Built in 1440, the church is a pivotal work of the early Renaissance. Brunelleschi was one of the first architects to use perspective and geometry, breaking away from outdated medieval church styles. Brunelleschi thought beauty resided in harmony and mathematical perfection. He was inspired by the classicism of ancient Rome, creating an unassuming exterior and a rather severe interior. Brunelleschi used a latin cross (like a small t) floorpan. The main altar, an out of place Baroque affair, is at the center of the crossing square. Three sides of Santo Spirito have a continuous succession of 40 identical semi-circular chapels. The massive pietra forte Corinthian columns give the church a monumentality. Santo Spirito houses a wooden crucifix attributed to Michelangelo. It was carved when the artist was only 17. Restored, it now hangs 22 meters high in the sacristy designed by Lorenzo the Magnificent's favorite architect Giuliano da Sangallo. For 3 euros, you can access the sacristy from the cloister and see the crucifix in the round.

The church of Santo Spirito founded in 1250 received its present form in the 15th century when it was built after a model by Brunelleschi who had conceived it as a twin to the church of San Lorenzo.

One of the most beautiful Florentine Churches by Filippo Brunelleschi facing the fascinating square with the same name. This square is the heart of the Oltrarno.

ZONE OLTRARNO AND PIAZZA SANTO SPIRITO: “DILADDARNO” or “OLTRARNO” (“on the other side of the Arno”) as Florentines say, is the whole area of Florence located on the left bank of the Arno River. This area of the city, an integral part of the historic center (in fact it includes the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens), includes the famous districts of San Frediano, Santo Spirito, Borgo San Jacopo and Porta Romana. Also in this part of the city there are many monuments and examples of religious architecture: the Basilica of Santo Spirito, the Brancacci Chapel, the church of San Felice in Piazza, the church of San Frediano in Cestello, the church of San Jacopo Soprarno, the church of Santa Maria del Carmine and many more. You will also find examples of military architecture in the only sections of Renaissance city walls still intact and in the fortified gates: Porta Romana, Porta San Frediano, Porta San Giorgio, Porta San Miniato, Porta San Niccolò. THE BASILICA OF SANTO SPIRITO: in the homonymous square, it is one of the most suggestive points of Florence; it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and has always been, since its establishment, ruled by the monks of Sant’Agostino order. Inside there are works of the most famous Florentine artists like the wooden crucifix of the young Michelangelo. The square is often the location of numerous events or fairs, first of all the famous antique and crafts market that takes place (usually) every second Sunday of the month, excluding the months of July and August.
