The Graben next to St Stepehens Cathedral is the very heart of Vienna and a very nice area gto go shopping. Especially around christmas with its grand chandeliers it is a unique experience. At new year´s eve everybody dances the Donauwalzer and the Graben turns into a vast ballroom. It leads to the golden quarter and Kohlmarkt with the fancy shops from Cartier to Prada, Gucci, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.

The Naschmarkt has developed into a meeting point for young and old. The Flea Market on Saturday is already a cult event. On the Naschmarkt, a colorful crowd buys fruit, vegetables and various delicacies from every country from dawn till dusk. Increasing numbers of trendy "in" places are also finding somewhere to set up in the more than 120 market stands, and even offer free Wifi.

Rochusmarkt is situated on a lovely, open and sunny square in Vienna’s 3rd district, perched on Landstraße. Back in the 12th century, this location was already an important trade route, and since around 1786 it has housed a flower market, which has changed over the centuries to become the place we know today. Flowers are your first and final impression at Rochusmarkt. Amongst its small collection of permanent and temporary stands, the market offers a range of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and a cheese speciality store. It also boasts various lunch options (Turkish, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Austrian, and the famed Rochus Würstelstand). You will mostly see people living in the area stopping by to pick up groceries, or sit amongst the ambience in one of the restaurant or cafe gardens. My favourites + The tiny, inviting Italian restaurant, ‘Pappa e ciccia’ open until late at night. We think they may think they’re in Italy as they keep their chairs and tables out front even in winter! And the food is bonafide Italian deliciousness. + The cafe/wine bar, Arrigo. Life is good when sitting in their garden out front. + The famous Trzsniewsky Brötchen - little sandwiches in all dirfferent colours and flavours on very dark bread.

Griechenbeisl is located on Fleischmarkt 11 near the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in one of the oldest parts of the city at the beginning of the Griechengasse. The restaurant derives its name from the Levantine merchants, who lived in the vicinity of the building, and the intensive trade relations between Vienna and the Orient since the time of the Babenberger period. The first documentary mention of the Griechenbeisl dates back to 1447. Around 1500, the building later to become part of (and named for) the Greek quarter was called "Zum gelben Adler" ("At the Yellow Eagle"). In later records the building is referred to as a "guest house" - this name being associated with a tower forming part of the former town fortifications of circa 1200 and possibly incorporated later into a Late Gothic residential building in the 14th century. When Greek and Levantine merchants arrived around the middle of the seventeenth century, the area into which they moved became known as the Greek quarter. It was thus that the guest house acquired its present epithet "Greek". The food that it served, however was always of the traditional Viennese kind. Historically important is the year 1852 when the host Leopold Schmied decided to bring the completely new "Pilsner Urquell" from Pilsen in Bohemia to Vienna for the first time. In the 17th century, the singer and bagpiper Marx Augustin regularly appeared here.

Situated between Schönlaterngasse and Köllnerhofgasse the Heiligenkreuzerhof is often referred to as the oldest apartment building in Vienna. He was born in the 12th/13th It was built in the 19th century and has belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz since that time. The medieval cellar vaults date from this period. In 1587 stonemasonry work was carried out by Italian masters, the brothers Elias and Alexius Payos from the monastery's own quarries at Kaisersteinbruch. However, a large part of the courtyard, the chapel and the prelate's court were demolished in the Baroque period and rebuilt by order of the abbots of the Heiligenkreuz monastery between 1659 and 1676. The courtyard only got its current appearance after further renovations in 1769-1771, and the outer facades also date from this period. The revitalized Biedermeier district near the MuseumsQuartier has countless restaurants, cafés and bars with idyllic gardens - often slightly hidden in romantic courtyards. The Vienna Spittelberg, with its small, romantic lanes and the charming Biedermeier buildings is right next to the MuseumsQuartier. Between Breite Gasse and Sigmundsgasse is a lively entertainment area with outlets ranging from the typical Viennese inn to the smart bar, from the tasteful restaurant to the popular student pub. Most of them entice guests in the summertime with Schanigärten (as the Viennese call their outdoor dining areas). The young crowd like to go to the Amerling-Beisl. The idyllic Biedermeier garden in the inner courtyard here is especially worth seeing. The Tian Bistro on Spittelberg serves great vegetarian cuisine in a cozy ambiance with lots of warm wood.

The Kirche Zur Heiligsten Dreifaltigkeit in Vienna, better known as the Wotruba Church, is located on the Sankt Georgenberg in Mauer (corner of Rysergasse and Georgsgasse) in Liesing, the 23rd District of Vienna. It was built between August 1974 and October 1976 on the basis of a model by Fritz Wotruba. Wotruba died before the completion of the church, which was inspired by a visit to Chartres Cathedral. To Wotruba, Chartres represented the essence of Europe, and Wotruba subsequently held up Chartres as a yardstick to his own work. Wotruba was first and foremost a sculptor, and the church was a collaboration with Fritz G. Mayr, who continued the work after Wotruba's death. The building consists of 152 asymmetrically arranged concrete blocks of a size between 0.84 m3 to 64 m3, weighing from 1.8 to 141 tons; the highest block measures 13.10m. The church, which borders the Wienerwald, is 30 m long, 22 m wide, and 15.5 m high. The unusual design created some local resistance.

A jewel for people who are interested in architecture. The center is the apartment where MSL lived in Vienna until her death in 2000 at the age of 103. You will see the original interior designed by the grande dame. Margarete "Grete" Lihotzky was an Austrian architect and a communist activist in the Austrian resistance to Nazism. She is mostly remembered today for designing what is known as the Frankfurt kitchen which was the prototype of the built-in kitchen now prevalent in the Western world. The invention of the Frankfurt kitchen followed her throughout her life. "I am not a kitchen" is one of her most famous statements. "Had I known that everyone would only talk about this damned kitchen, I would never have invented it," she said in an interview. And rightly so. Because Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was so much more. The figure of the century was one of the first women in Vienna to study architecture. She was really gripped by social housing; in Red Vienna she designed a number of estate houses – including for the Wiener Werkbundsiedlung, a workers' association housing complex. A replica of the Frankfurt kitchen can be seen on permanent display in the MAK Design Lab at the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna. Her last apartment in Franzensgasse is open to visitors in October 2022 from Tuesday to Friday. The heritage listed apartment was completely refurbished and reconstructed.

Colorful areas, irregular forms, many grown over with lush green plants: this is how painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) encouraged new impulses – and not only to Vienna’s architecture. He also created an exhibition center offering a permanent exhibition of Hundertwasser’s works as well as changing exhibitions of exciting contemporary art. Master Hundertwasser has completely transformed the former Thonet bentwood furniture factory in his characteristic style. Today, irregular elements of glass, metal, bricks, wood and ceramic tiles in many colors give a unique character to the formerly inconspicuous building. Opened in 1991, Kunst Haus Wien houses a permanent Hundertwasser exhibition on two floors and two additional floors are devoted to changing exhibitions. On the ground floor, there is a café-restaurant and a shop.

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the symbol of Vienna. Construction commenced in the 12th century. Today, it is one of the most important Gothic structures in Austria. St. Stephen's Cathedral is 107.2 meters long and 34.2 meters wide. It has four towers. The tallest of these is the south tower at 136.44 meters. The tower room, from which there is a gigantic view across Vienna, is reached via 343 steps. A total of 13 bells hang here. However, the best-known bell of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Pummerin, is located in the 68.3 meter-tall north tower. It is the second-biggest free-swinging chimed church bell in Europe. On the roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral, colorful roof tiles were laid to create the Royal and Imperial double-headed eagle and the coat of arms of the city of Vienna. The interior of St. Stephen's Cathedral was changed again and again over the centuries, right through to the Baroque period.

The Vienna Secession (German: Wiener Secession; also known as the Union of Austrian Artists, or Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs) is an art movement, closely related to Art Nouveau, that was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic artists, sculptors and architects, including Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt. They resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists in protest against its support for more traditional artistic styles. Their most influential architectural work was the Secession Building designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich as a venue for expositions of the group. In 1905 the group itself split, when some of the most prominent members, including Klimt, Wagner, and Hoffmann, resigned in a dispute over priorities. The Secession exhibition gallery is independently led and managed by artists and shows an international avantgarde exhibition program.

The Belvedere 21 is a place of artistic production, reception, and reflection. Open and generously laid out, the building is a key work of Austrian post-war modernity and serves today as a space for discourse and experimentation, where society is explored and discussed. Along with its three exhibition floors, the overall concept for the Belvedere 21 also includes the Blickle Kino, a learning centre, and a sculpture garden. The Belvedere 21 is located in one of the most significant post-war era buildings. Awarded the Grand Prix d’Architecture, the museum was initially constructed by Viennese architect Karl Schwanzer for the 1958 Brussels World Expo. Its sleek formal structure, glass halls and use of fresh building materials class the pavilion as a prime example of modern architecture. After the Brussels World’s Fair the building was reinstalled in the Viennese Schweizer Garten, adapted to the museum’s purposes and opened as the Museum of the Twentieth Century in September 1962

Around Vienna

Here I describe some beautiful and worthwhile places around Vienna.
45 Minutes by car, train or with the DDSG BLUE DANUBE Boats. The UNESCO world heritage is one of the oldest habitats on the Danube and Wachau Valley with a long history of cultivating wine. Krems is also a very modern city with a newly built contemprary art museum, an international Kunsthalle and a cartoon museum. The Wachau Valley is one of the most beautiful regions in Austria and known for its rolling hills, vineyards and fortresses. Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the castle above the town of Dürnstein. Highlights of nearby Gottweig Abbey include its lavish baroque church and views across the valley. Melk Abbey is a vast monastery also with an opulent baroque church. It is famous for the Apricots. The blossoms in spring, the harvest in summer and the delicous marmelade and juices. It is also the region where you find one of the most famous wine yards with restaurants and boutique hotels like. The winegrowers are particularly proud of Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd: three excellent and registered brands from the region. If you want to taste your way through, you can do so at wine taverns and winegrowers. Weinherbst Wachau is particularly beautiful when the sun bathes the vineyards - and the drops in the glass - in golden light.

Christmas Markets

From mid-November until Christmas, Vienna's most beautiful squares are once again transformed into magical Christmas markets. The aroma of Christmas baking, hot punch and toasted almonds wafts through the air. The Old City and shopping streets are decorated with festive lights that spread the Christmas cheer in Vienna.
The Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung in the city center is committed to tradition. A Christmas market was held here as early as 1772; today, it is a place to buy handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional mangers and ceramics. Festive Advent music can be heard on the square from 4.00 pm. Top-quality handicrafts can also be purchased a couple of steps further along at the Am Hof Christmas Market. Christmas music and choral singing provide the perfect atmosphere.

The Rathausplatz is our signature Christmas market. A tall arched gateway with candles welcomes visitors at the entrance to the Viennese Christmas Market on City Hall Square. The traditional Christmas Market offers Christmas gifts, Christmas tree decorations, handicrafts, culinary treats, confectionery, and warming drinks. At the Vienna Ice World at the Christmas Market, ice skaters can put on their skates and make rounds through the romantically illuminated City Hall Park. A special attraction for couples in love is the tree of hearts. For children, there's a 12 meter-high multi-level carousel and in the park a Christmas world with reindeer train, nativity scene trail, children's chalet, and a designated skating ring.
