Located next to Salvation Mountain, a sovereign town occupied by free spirits and free birds. Can be seen in the 2007 movie, Into The Wild. A place of local artists with their artistic creations in the outskirts of the valley.

Slab City, also called The Slabs, is an unincorporated, off-the-grid alternative lifestyle community consisting largely of snowbirds in the Salton Trough area of the Sonoran Desert, in Imperial County, California. It’s about an hour south of Joshua Tree National Park .

Slab City is a conglomerate of transients and artists alike, and everything else in between. Located about 2 hours SE of Joshua Tree. Worth the drive for a unique opportunity to experience some subversive art and interact with a raw and emerging counter-culture. P.S. Not recommended for the germaphobe type.
