When I’ve got plenty of time on my hands, I take this drive out to Amboy and the Mojave National Preserve (another spot where you do get Joshua Trees...besides in JTNP), and the crater is a lovely little spot to climb. It’s quite near the iconic Roy’s Motel signpost that’s often used to symbolize Route 66...so go for the postcard pictures!

The landscape is amazing! As you drive up you'll start to see lava rock peppering the desert. The lizards you'll see out there are definitely supersized! During the summer go very early in the morning. Bring lots of water! Also fill up on gas in 29 plams. Roys is not always open and when it is its about $6/gallon. No shops or places to eat there.

The Amboy Crater is stark & beautiful. You can hike all the way inside the crater. You’ll want to pack lots of water & snacks/picnic to eat. There are plenty of picnic tables and the Historic Route 66 emblem is painted on the road for the perfect road trip photo op.
