Cool museum all about climbing extreme mountains. The nearest 14'er (mountain above 14,000 feet elevation) is Mt. Evans in nearby Idaho Springs (30 mins away).

Golden is home of the American Mountaineering Center. Their museum is top-notch and has pictures, memorabilia and artifacts from many famous climbs including the first summit of Everest. If you love mountaineering, you will want to see this. And if you're lucky, you'll get to meet some of our more famous mountaineering residents--we have several who have summited many of the world's tallest peaks and aided in some of the most famous rescue missions. I always love going through the museum.

A great museum of mountaineering history. Great displays and artifacts. $5 Also Golden is a great waking, hiking and biking area. Start a walk from the carriage house and enjoy a walk up the Clear Creek path to Clear Creek Canyon. Hike to rim of both Table Top Mountains. Fun bike rides on paved paths in every direction from downtown Golden.
