where are the locals

In Garðabær we have a few restaurants, and you probably won’t see a lot of tourists there. The restaurants are Mathús Garðabær, Flatey Pizza and Te & Kaffi (coffee shop). Our favorite is Mathúsið. Icelandic people love ice cream, even if it’s cold outside. We recommend going to the ice cream parlor “Huppa” which is in Garðatorg (you can find it easily on Maps) and get “Bragðarefur” which is ice-cream with sweets mixed in. It’s very popular in Iceland. There are a few grocery stores nearby; Bónus (budget friendly), Hagkaup (most expensive but open 24/7), and Krónan (mid-priced but has a

Getting around

Transport There is a regular bus service to downtown Reykjavík. Timetables are available from straeto .is We’d recommend a short walk to the bus stop at Ásgarður and get the No.1 service directly into town. You can also get a bus to Ásgarður from the bus stop at the end of the path at the back of the house, if you don’t want to walk. If you plan to drive into town, we recommend you download the parking app “Parka” (parka.app/). This covers all parking lots and areas in Reykjavík, and you will see signs for where to use it in town. Taxis are available by calling 588 5522,

Winter visit

Winter activities If you want to see the northern lights you can check the activities on the website https://auroraforecast .is/. If the conditions are right you can see the northern lights outside our home but if you want to go to a place with no light to see them best, you can walk to Vífilstaðavatn or go to Heiðmörk. If you are in Iceland for Christmas we recommend going to the cemetery and seeing how it is lit up with Christmas lights. It’s a very special place for Icelandic people for christmas. You can for instance go to Fossvogs kirkjugarður.

Traditional food

Traditional food If you would like to have traditional food we recommend the restaurant Cafe Loki in downtown Iceland (close to Hallgrímskirkja). Meat soup, rye bread with smoked salmon & waffles with jam and cream are excellent icelandic disches as well as any lamb dishes (we are very proud of our lamb meat). If you want to be adventurous try the fermented shark and dried fish.
