The tower itself is an iconic and quintessential part of a European vacation, but it really has a cool and unique story. It leans way further than I thought it did, and it's kind of scary to contemplate it! One good earthquake and it will be down. Allegedly they've tried multiple times over the years to reinforce the side that's sinking, but to little avail. Soon, it will be unsafe and unsecured to stand alone and we may not have a leaning tower someday.

Volterra is a town of Etruscan origins and of great architectural interest, located 629 mt above the sea level, between the rivers Era and Cecina in Tuscany. It is a Middle-Age town, one of the few perfectly preserved and still inhabited of Italy. The ambience of Volterra is extremely attractive, easily rivaling that of the more famous neighbouring Tuscan destination of San Gimignano. Volterra is a working town and has cafes, restaurants, bars and shops which are open all year round. Volterra is lively and hosts numerous festivals and exhibitions through the year: Jazz, Theatre, Music, Middle-Age Representaions and more. A peculiarity to entertain you during your visit- Near Volterra, Staccioli sculptures frame the landscape If you have driven up the SR 68 road to Volterra you will have noticed (and maybe stopped to photograph) the stunning red metal circle that frames the landscape and asks us to consider Tuscany’s rolling hills a work of art. This work is by Mauro Staccioli, considered a master of modern art (originally from Volterra) and there are many in the countryside around Volterra. The original 2010 exhibition “Luoghi d’Esperienza” (The places of experience) provided a map to create a treasure hunt to find these points in which art meets nature. See the brochure and start your hunt!

If you're a fan of Leonardo da Vinci, you'll probably want to stop in Vinci, his birthplace and spend an hour or two in this museum dedicated to Leonardo, the Inventor. It features full-scale models of his machines and inventions, and set within an historical context. The museum store is also fun, full of Leonardiano, from silk scarves to shopping bags and build it yourself kits.
