Ljósafoss Power Station – One of the country’s oldest hydroelectric power stations is Ljósafoss Power Station, a 8 km (10 min) drive south on road 36 from the cottage. There is a fun interactive energy exhibition that is open, summer 2023, every day between 10:00 and 17:00. Free entrance.

Þingvellir National Park – If you haven’t already been to visit Þingvellir NP, we suggest you drive the long way from the cottage, around the lake. The drive is 46 km, takes about 40-50 minutes and is very pretty. The short way is about 22 km/25 minutes and is also very pretty. Þingvellir is an important site in Iceland, both historically and geographically. It sits in a rift valley between the fissures of Almannagjá and Hrafnagjá and was the site where the first settlers in Iceland, the Vikings, founded Alþingi, the oldest parliament in the world. Þingvellir NP is also a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

The power station is responsible for the plume of steam that you can see rising from the mountain if you look across the lake from the cottage. The mountain Hengill has many popular hiking trails. The most popular and accessible one goes from the town of Hveragerði up to Reykjadalur (Steam valley), where you can bathe in the warm creek that runs there.

In medieval time, Skálholt was one of two episcopal seats in Iceland, the other is Hólar in north Iceland. The last catholic bishop was executed there in 1550. Now there is a cathedral there but you can see a medieval sarcophagus, headstones and other things from an archaeological excavation done in 1954.

To go down to the lake from the cottage you walk/drive back to the main road and turn right towards the lake. It is a very short drive and about 5-10 minutes walk. The lake is very cold and swimming in it is not recommended at any time. However, the view is beautiful, especially around sunset.

Taking a left towards North from the gate of Veiðilundur (road 36), then a right at the next crossroads (road 365) takes you to Laugarvatn in about 20 minutes (21 km).

They also have a geothermal bakery. You can book a time to visit and have a taste of the rye bread they bake by the hot spring, and the local smoked trout.

Iceland has state monopoly on selling alcohol. The shops are called Vínbúðin and those shops are the only ones selling alcohol. Selfoss has a decent shop. Alcohol in Iceland is very expensive. If you intend to have drinks in Iceland we recommend you do your shopping in the Duty Free stores before entering the country.
