George Van Tassel (1910-1978), creator of the Integratron, was a legendary figure, an aeronautical engineer and test pilot who worked for Lockheed, Douglas Aircraft, and alongside Howard Hughes at Hughes Aviation. He also was a leader in the UFO movement who held annual “Spacecraft Conventions” at Giant Rock for 25 years. Van Tassel claimed that the structure of the Integratron is based on the design of Moses’ Tabernacle, the writings of engineer/physicist Nikola Tesla, and telepathic directions from extraterrestrials. The site is available by appointment for public and private “Sound Baths.” The Integratron is located approximately 30 miles northwest of Twentynine Palms. 2477 Belfield Blvd. (P.O. Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together in Joshua Tree National Park. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California. About 2.8 million visitors come to the park each year to enjoy activities such as hiking, camping, photography, rock climbing, and simply enjoying the serene desert scenery. Although the park encompasses some 800,000 acres, most of it is not accessible by road. Two main roads run through the park: Park Boulevard, which runs west to east from Twentynine Palms and the North Entrance to the West Entrance and the town of Joshua Tree; and Pinto Basin Road, which joins up with Park Boulevard and runs south to north from Interstate 10 and the Cottonwood Visitor Center to the North Entrance and the town of Twentynine Palms. Note that pets are not allowed on trails in the park; the only exception is the Oasis of Mara paved trail. Pets are allowed on-leash on the unpaved roads and on the roads within the campgrounds and picnic areas.

City/town information

In 1946, Pioneertown was founded by a group of Hollywood investors, including actors Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. They dreamed of creating an Old West set that was actually a town worth visiting, with 1880s-style false-front façades but interiors visitors could enter, with actual businesses inside. Up went frontier stables, saloons, and jails; inside, they housed ice cream parlours, bowling alleys and motels. More than 50 films and television shows were filmed here in the 1940s and ‘50s. While location shooting and businesses here have dwindled, you can still see mock gunfights on Mane Street. But the most happening place by far is Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace, with surprisingly good live music (Robert Plant and Leon Russell have played here) in a seemingly unlikely setting. This must-see desert find also serves up awesome ribs, plus classic Santa Maria barbecue, burgers, sandwiches and salads. Pioneertown is located approximately 10 miles from Joshua Tree National Park and 25 miles from Palm Springs.
