David’s Guidebook to Oak Island

This special Carolina coastal town is full of interesting shops and galleries and restaurants. It is telling that many movies have been filmed in Southport, including Firestarter, Crimes of the Heart and Weekend at Bernies to name a few. We enjoy dining on the water at Fishy Fishy, and then walking through the various art galleries and antique shops that line the streets of the downtown area. There are several interesting houses from the Victorian era that line the street along the waterfront, giving a historic feel. It is quintessential Carolina coast - salty, laid back, unique and charming.

Southport

Food scene
This is the closest restaurant to our home on Oak Island, and also one of the best. It sits literally on the beach, and has terrific views of the ocean from every table. The food is fantastic, and features local seafood, which is not to be missed on any trip to Oak Island. The attire is casual (but not "beach casual"). Reservations are recommended, as tables fill up quickly here. On occasion, I've sidestepped reservations and found success sliding into an open spot at the bar for dinner. A meal at the bar will also reward you with terrific conversation with the bartender and other patrons - I promise you'll learn something new about Oak Island!

They have a terrific menu, which features local seafood, and typically an interesting special or 2. Fun Fact: One night while dining here, I ran into the actor Kevin James of "King of Queens" and "Mall Cop" fame, who was on the island filming the upcoming movie "Boys of Summer" with Mel Gibson. You never know what will happen at Shagger Jacks! Bottom line - a terrific, casual, salty place with friendly staff and good food for a reasonable price.
