Drinks & Nightlife

The anticipated 2019 Reader Best Of Chicago reveal Andersonville and its local businesses racked up the awards with an overwhelming number of wins. In the end more than 30,000 votes were tabulated allowing Andersonville to boast about what most of its residents already knew, the neighborhood is awesome!
Since 1934, Simon's has anchored this part of Clark Street in Andersonville. One of our FAVORITE hangouts... we love Simon's Tavern! Fish drinking martinis, glögg, Viking paraphernalia, ancient Schlitz advertising, and Swedish roots make Simon's not only an excellent neighborhood bar but also an interesting experience for anyone that steps within its friendly environs. The owner Scott, our local viking, is a great guy and is always willing to give the nickel tour of Simon's Tavern where one can learn a whole lot about the days of prohibition in Chicago and the history of his little establishment. They have the best juke box in Chicago! If you meet Scott, tell him you're staying with us!

Be prepared to take a step back in time... shades of Al Capone’s heyday are found in the wall memorabilia as you enter and in the famous booth where he and his henchmen could keep a cautious eye on both doors. Today, the Green Mill, in keeping with owner Dave Jemilo’s philosophy for a proper mix of down-to-earth friendliness and class, maintains an authenticity of the ‘40s in service, price and music, perfected upon with the steady Sunday night performance of the internationally acclaimed Uptown Poetry Slam which Marc Smith began at the Mill in 1986. If you enjoy Jazz... DON'T MISS THE GREEN MILL!

A timeless place rooted in the history of Chicago magic. The magic lounge offers craft cocktails, small plates, along with a generous dose of close-up magic! Be sure to get your tickets online for a show (they sell out weeks in advance). HOWEVER, the front bar is always open for you to pop in for a drink and magic at the bar.

When owner Julia opened Bar Roma, the entire neighborhood was excited! She has created an AWESOME Italian restaurant with a relaxed vibe and delicious menu with chef Fred Ramos. BEST HAPPY HOUR... 5pm-6:30pm half-off all appetizers, salads, and meatballs (vegetarian options too!) Our FAVORITE is their week night Happy Hour 5:00pm-6:30pm with all apps, salads, and meatballs for half-price as well as their house wine. If you are greeted by Julia, tell her you're friends of Mat and Randy. She'll be thrilled to meet you!

When owners Micheal & Louise opened Hopleaf in 1992 it was a small local bar that welcomed everyone and did one thing very well... select GREAT beers from all over world! Today, Hopleaf has grown significantly and is one of the anchor bars/restaurants in Andersonville. We guarantee you'll have a good time at Hopleaf. They have a huge selection of beers from around the world (lots of Belgium beers!) and even excellent wines on tap. Their menu is excellent too... not that expansive, but you'll have a hard time deciding what to order because everything is delicious!

The First Slice is also such an aptly-named gem, since the first slice of their efforts- indeed- every slice, is put to use so sweetly: they are a not-for-profit business! They donate 600+ meals each week to organizations all around Chicago! First Slice Pie has garnered much praise through the years and even got Martha Stewart’s attention as she named it one of her favorite Chicago pit stops when in town.

Entertainment & Activities

When business partners, Joey and Dan came to our neighborhood block club meeting to present their idea for opening a Magic Lounge, everyone was intrigued with how they'd pull it off. A bar? A theater? A magic library? 30 Chicago Magicians coming together to create their own theater? What they've created is a magical experience for everyone who enters! Not going to give too much away, but we were amazed when we attended opening night! Like days long ago, this speakeasy is located in the 'laundromat' just around the corner from our house. When you enter, just ring the bell for service and be prepared to have a GREAT time!
