You can also visit Universal City Walk, full of restaurants and other shops. It's a Disney-fied idea of what a clean, safe street would look like. And there's no entrance fee! Metro stop convenient to this location.
Echo Park with its picturesque iconic small lake and fountain is worth a visit. You can rent a paddle boat or just take a walk around the lake. Echo Park is a neighborhood close to hip and trendy Silver Lake. (Though Echo Park is no slouch in the hipster dept.) You can take a walk on Sunset Blvd for restaurants, shops and such to get the gist of what these two neighborhoods have to offer.

This is a smaller beach with a significant rock formation at it's southernmost end. This is a popular film location and, of particular note, this beach was where they shot the final scene of the original "Planet of the Apes" movie.

There is a campground here that is very popular with the hiking set. But there is also a day-use area on the beach side of PCH that is a nice spot to hang out, use the barbecue facilities, or bring a picnic and lounge on the beach.

The Washington/National stop is a better one for when you want to head downtown.
