Having a Passport will make things much quicker and in general provide you with a better experience while getting back home.
Passports are not required, yet highly recommended to avoid any extra delays.
Best times to cross back to the United States on the weekend is EARLY!!! 6am-9am you can expect the shortest wait times. After 9am the wait times increase substantially.
