Neighborhoods

Fiddletown is such a tiny town that it technically isn’t a town — according to Wikipedia, it’s a “census-designated place,” so if you’re looking for quiet, this is it! First settled in 1849, Fiddletown had a bit of a population boom a few years later when gold was discovered in the area. The most popular mining technique at the time relied on running water, and the local water source, Dry Creek, aptly ran dry through the summer months. Thus, the locals spent a lot of their time “fiddling around,” and the town got its charming name. Today, Fiddletown is less mining, but lies in the heart of the California Shenandoah Valley, and the abundance of wines means maybe we’re still fiddling around a bit. Be sure to stop by one of the many wineries or tasting rooms in the area! Additionally, the town is registered as a California Historical Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There are a few historic buildings that are all within very easy walking distance, including the Chew Kee Chinese Apothecary (check hours online before visiting, they are not always open). The Fiddletown Preservation Society has a great write up on the buildings in town as well as a self-guided walking tour route. After the tour, stop by Brown’s English Toffee for some sweets or sandwiches!

Food scene

I don’t care what the weather is, good ice cream is dope and Munnerlyn’s does not disappoint. The ice cream is made in-house, the flavors range from traditional to wacky, they change up the menu frequently, so just do yourself a favor and get the six-scoop sampler

Local brewery with plenty of outdoor seating! Pro-tip: parking looks deceptively small, but there is a hidden lot in the back and overflow parking across the street. Just be careful not to park in front of the other business in the lot because they don’t seem to like it and it’s a towing company. Usually open Thursday through Sunday, and if you check their instagram, they often have some sort of food truck in the lot.

Try some wine and enjoy some great company! Hidden in the back of the Amador City Mercantile Shop is one of my favorite gems of Amador County. The owners, Gordon and Virgie, are absolutely lovely people and will definitely make you feel at home. There is usually live music, so follow the tunes :)

Tiny little beer tavern with a lovely patio! The selection is pretty small, but good and they’ve somehow nailed the unlikely intersection of rustic and modern. Great place to stop for a drink or two (or three or four…)
