A Guide for the Desert Bohemian

The Neighborhood

The Friendly Hills-JT Highlands neighborhood within which Desert Bohemia is located (we're on the border) is mostly local-residential, with a few scattered Airbnb properties. It's very quiet day and night and there is very little outdoor night time lighting. Friendly Hills just to the west is a little more of a full time local, working class neighborhood with small lots that are relatively close together, whereas The Joshua Tree Highlands neighborhood, which span eastward, basically begins with the western boundary of our property, are bigger horse properties with some acreage. Desert Bohemia is on a 2.5 acre lot. We do not have horses.

The Town

Joshua Tree is a small community in the Mojave Desert at the western entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, which is about 30 minutes from Palm Springs in what's called the "high desert." We're about 135 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, and between 2 and 3 hours west of Las Vegas. The Colorado River is also to the east and Big Bear is visible just to the west. Desert Bohemia is located within a mile of the NP entrance and we have our own neighborhood park trails just a short walk from the property.

Yucca Valley is the last commercial dense area you will pass through on your way to Joshua Tree. There you will find many modern grocery, convenience, drug and liquor stores, alongside fast food, gas stations, chain restaurants and mom and pop restaurants. This is where you'll want to stop and stock up on any goods for your stay that you haven't already acquired.

Catch a live show and eat some amazing grill fare at the world renowned Pappy and Harriet's. Pappy has passed away and Harriet sold it years ago to a nice couple, who, in turn, just sold it again themselves after building it up to what it is today, a destination venue, that's is on most touring artists' radar and very difficult to get a table most nights. To have a PandH's show on one's resume is a badge of honor these days.

Noah Purifoy, known for his work on the Watts Towers, built an assemblage art compound on 10 acres over the course of years. I recently took a guest to see it and have noticed it has been cleaned up a bit, but it still has a lot of interesting work there. This is a must see. Joshua Tree is a magnet for all kinds of artists looking for some peace and quiet and nature and space. Noah moved to Joshua Tree in 1987, 4 years before your humble host arrived himself. He was a pioneer and visionary artist here.

Until it split in recent years, this was rumored to be the largest freestanding boulder in the world. I think it still is anyway.

Hiking and Climbing

This is a seldom congested trail that has been a neighborhood secret for many years, that is, until the short term rentals arrived and all created guidebooks (like this one). It's still pretty secluded on most days. You can walk to the entrance from Desert Bohemia. This is part of the park but doesn't require a pass. Keep dogs on a leash and take a baggie or two with you.

Sightseeing

This is a tourist favorite. A few miles into the park from the western entrance, Keys View, on clear days and nights, offers a breathtaking view of the Coachella Valley, snow capped Mt. San Jacinto, the Salton Sea and even a mountaintop in Mexico.

Порада щодо міста

Звичаї та культура

Please be mindful of outside lighting and noise at night.

Please limit the usage of outside lights after sundown to only that which is absolutely necessary. The residents and tourists alike are in large part here to see the night skies. With so many people hip to our community it has brought in light pollution. This is one of the two most common reasons for complaints against STRs here. The other one is obviously noise. Sounds carry for miles out here.
Транспорт

You'll most likely need a car to get around.

There are some taxis in the hi desert but they have never been known to be speedy. There is travel between Joshua Tree, 29 Palms, Yucca Valley and Morongo Valley by local bus and it's super cheap and also takes passengers into the park as well these days. But a car is best. The bus might be able to get you around peak season entrance traffic though. Check with the NPS on that though.
