Food scene

Legendary food and drink bar/restaurant in Pioneer Town, located only 10 minutes from Casa Bandidos. There is often live music and both outdoor and indoor spaces. The food is great and the drinks are even better. This is a place everyone should stop by during their visit.

The best place for your morning coffee, breakfast sandwich or tasty lunch. My favorites are both the breakfast sandwiches, the tuna melt (I ask for it on sourdough) and the BLT is AMAZING. Just a few minute drive from Casa Bandidos.

Right next to Pappy and Harriets in Pioneer Town without the crowds. I think it's one of the desert's best kept secrets. Lots of indoor and outdoor dining. Great mixed drink selection and fantastic southwestern Mexicali bites. The rolled tacos are excellent, but the real winner here is the chips a queso, I promise you won't be disappointed.

My favorite brunch spot! Very hearty home cooking in the desert. My top picks are the breakfast burrito, the biscuits and gravy, or the French toast. You won't be disappointed. This spot is great for groups, couples, and the solo traveler.

For an upscale treat, La Copine is the best restaurant in the desert. Claire Wadsworth and Nikki Hill are both partners in life and partners in business with their restaurant, La Copine. The buzzworthy brunch and lunch spot has become a desert darling with its upscale treats like ceviche, cheesesteaks, and shrimp rolls. Don’t leave without trying a cocktail, too.

This barbecue joint in downtown Joshua Tree feeds both locals and visitors. They have a respectable beer selection and every manner of smoked meat. They frequently have music and they also have a large outdoor patio.

One of the newest additions to the high desert. I absolutely love this place, my favorite is the tuna sandwich, but you really can't go wrong with any selection. Their bakery goods are also a delight. Love the staff, love the food, a great spot to dine in or take to-go.

Looking like a domed planetarium, this 38-foot high, 55-foot wide spot was designed to be an “electrostatic generator for the purpose of rejuvenation and time travel,” according to its charismatic creator. Now it hosts regular sound baths for guests and locals alike. Expect to sit quietly in the domed space while instructors slowly spin copper bowls that sing out with different notes, depending on their size and shape. The vibrations will move through you, so just sit back and soak in the feelings this tonal music brings.

As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That couldn’t be more true for the Noah Purifoy Desert Art Museum. The open-air museum displays Purifoy’s assemblage sculptures, which he created out of trash he gathered from around the area between 1989 and 2004. It’s odd, wonderful, and awe-inspiring—just like Joshua Tree itself.

In the desert, old things often take on a new life. And that's the case with this One-Hour Fotomat booth that has been converted into a museum stuffed with crocheted animals and figures. While the name might be a bit hyperbolic, there’s no denying the charm of this pocket-sized place “staffed” by a crocheted alligator called Bunny.

It looms seven stories above the sandy basin floor. The rock is a magnet for spiritual vortexes and UFOs. For skeptics such myself, it seems more like a magnet for kooky characters and tall tales. The Giant Rock used to be a key stop for nomadic Native Americans and the Hopi used it for shamanic ceremonies. There is also a rumor that it sits on an energy vortex, of the kind you might find in Sedona Arizona or Tulum Mexico. The Rock is just a 10 minute drive up a dirt road from the Integretron. The road is a little rough in spots Drive carefully and avoid the road if it has been raining recently.

Keys Ranch is the only thing on this list that is located inside the National Park, rather than Joshua Tree town. It’s one of the best things to do in Joshua Tree, but hardly anybody does it. It’s worth making time for Keys Ranch because you’ll get a feel for the harsh pioneer life of the mid 1900’s, and Keys himself was quite a character. The yard is a like a museum of homesteading equipment and an art exhibit for jerry rigged contraptions. The ranch is available by guided tour only. They only have space for 25 people per day so you must book the $10 reservation in advance.
