The Noah Purifoy Museum is my absolute favorite place in Joshua Tree. First of all, it's FREE! Second, it's never crowded. Most likely you'll be the only person or group there. Third, you can go anytime (though early morning or late afternoon will provide the best lighting for those pictures I know you'll want to take). Just drive up, get out, and explore! You'll have to drive at least an hour to get here, but how often do you get to walk the rim of an ancient volcano in a desert? This activity is not recommended during summertime unless you plan a sunrise hike. Take plenty of water! And be sure to stop at Roy's famous cafe on the way.

Want to avoid the national park fee? Check out Indian Cove instead. You can hike and see the same big rocks that are inside the national park, but for free! Does not connect to the rest of the park.

This is another free alternative to the national park. It's actually a pretty hidden, less known area right outside the park (on the left as you head toward the Joshua Tree entrance). It's limited to day use only and is great for biking, hiking, and exploring. Bring binoculars and try to spot the wildlife that live here!
I love this place because I'm fascinated by old things and because it's packed with treasures. Make sure to stop in and explore, get your hair done, or pick up some vintage items to bring home as a souvenir. The owner recently had some of his salon-inspired creations featured at the airport in San Francisco. He's kind of a big deal :)

On the way to the Cholla Cactus Garden, stop at the Arch Rock Nature Trail for a quick hike to Arch Rock AND the famous Heart Rock. Take a picture in front of Heart Rock with your friend or lover. It's definitely a special photo op!
This is another of my favorite places in the park. This pretty flat trail will take you past a lot of old cars and the most interesting mine/mill in Joshua Tree.

This is where I like to head for date night or a great brunch. The atmosphere is the best in town! Make sure to call ahead for reservations and also check their Instagram to see if any entertainment is booked. They often have live bands.

This is the closest coffee shop/bar to our house! They serve coffee in the mornings and cocktails at night. It's the perfect place to grab some extra caffeine before heading into the park. It's also an excellent place to get work done or have a creative writing session.

If you're lucky enough to come during the outdoor concert season, this is a phenomenal activity. It's a spontaneous drive-in concert hosted by a local violinist. Each week he invites different artists to join him. My favorite is when they play gypsy jazz. This concert is completely free but requires reservations. Donations are accepted. Don't forget to pack chairs, cushions, snacks and drinks to take with you. Alternatively, you can order snacks and drinks directly through Mon Petit Mojave's website and they will be available for pickup at the venue.

Pioneertown is a fun little place where a bunch of old western movies were filmed. In fact, it was founded by Roy Rogers and his buddies. When you visit you'll find a tiny little strip of buildings that were used as sets for the movies. Some of these are now little shops and/or museums. Have a walk around. Try to catch a Wild West show at 1pm on 2nd and 4th Saturdays. You'll have a wild time! And don't forget to stop in for food at Pappy and Harriet's!

Walking the dogs is a fun way to give back, support your own mental health, and get some exercise! During the hot summer months, walks are limited to 6 am and take place on Wednesday and Friday mornings. You can try just showing up, but it's best to let them know in advance that you'll be coming.
