City/town information

Borgarnes is an excellent choice for those who want to travel around West Iceland with its unique nature. Borgarnes is also a very friendly town with hiking opportunities along the picturesque coast. We are happy to share our favourite pearls in Borgarnes with you: • Swimming: There is a great geothermal swimming pool in Borgarnes (a 5 min walk from our home) with hot tubs and a jacuzzi, water slides and a fantastic sea view. • Cafés: Blómasetrið - Kaffi Kyrrð serves delicious home-made waffles with cream. • Englendingavík café offers sea view. • Bakery/café: Geirabakarí has the best bread and cakes in town (don't miss the Gulrótarrúgbraud!!). Great for breakfast! The movie the Life of Walter Mitty was filmed here. • Grocery shopping: Nettó, Borgarbraut 58, is open 10-19.hrs all days of the week. Bónus, Digranesgata. Opening hours on https://bonus.is/en/ Ljómalind Farmers Market, our unique cooperative arts and crafts store, has local delights directly from the farms in West Iceland. Try their real Skyr, fresh eggs, local cheese and hand made gifts. • Wine and beer: ”Vínbúdin” wine and liquor store is in the same building as Nettó. If you are planninng to buy wine or beer, I recommend you do so in the tax free store upon arrival at Keflavik Airport, as alcohol is quite expensive in Iceland. • The Settlement Center, which is based in two of Borgarnes’ oldest buildings just around the corner from our home, has a marvelous exhibition about the first settlers in Iceland and the Egils Saga. They also have an excellent restaurant and serve our favourite vegetarian lunch buffet daily (11.30-15.hrs). Open daily 10-21.hrs. Black Magic is a daily performance at 18hrs www.landnam.is/eng/ • Museum: The Borgarnes museum, just down the street (Bjarnarbraut 4-6), has a fascinating display of birds and a collection of photos throughout the century that give insight to the people and traditions in Iceland. The library, in the same building, is delighted to receive second hand books and dvd’s in English. Open Daily 13-17.hrs. http://safnahus.is/english/ • Art: Just a block away from our home, our friend and acclaimed artist Michelle Bird has her Art Studio. She offers art lessons and tours of her studio: https://www.theartofmichellebird.com/contact • Playground: Bjössaróló playground (10 min walk from our home near Englendingavík) was created by a carpenter and environmental pioneer, Björn H Guðmundsson, built from salvaged materials, teaching children the value of recycling and inventiveness. The kids big favourite! • Park: Skallagrímsgardur next to the swimming pool is a small public park which is ideal for a picnic. The park plays an important role in Egil's Saga, as the burial mound of Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson, Egil's father, is situated there. Restaurants: • Settlement Center Restaurant • La Colina Pizzeria • Englendingavik Restaurant • Grillhusid Fastfood • B59 Restaurant at the Hotel B59

Húsafell is a hiker’s dream. Fascinating walking routes are everywhere, with something new at every turn. Dense woods, lava formations, crystal-clear mountain springs, hot water, magnificent ravines, glaciers, rushing glacial rivers and an extraordinary animal and birdlife. Also ubiquitous are Páll á Húsafelli’s curious sculptures, which highlight the uniqueness of the land without imposing on it. Walking routes, such as paths through the woods, may be found for the entire family, while hikers who require more of a challenge might want to hike onto glaciers such as Eiríksjökull or Ok.

Reykholt is one of Iceland's most notable historical sites, most famous for being the home of Iceland's best-known author Snorri Sturluson during the years 1206-1241. An ancient geothermally-heated pool, Snorralaug, is named after him. It is one of the few things preserved whole from Iceland´s medieval period. The cultural centre Snorrastofa offers historical exhibitions and guided tours and lectures. Music recitals are held in the church of Reykholt. www.snorrastofa.is

The majestic Glanni waterfall in Nordurá river. A viewing deck offers a great view of the waterfall and in the summer time you can see wind North Atlantic salmon jump in the river. Nearby, you will find Paradísarlaut, a beautiful hollow, surrounded by a mossy lava field. A small pond is in the middle of the hollow, fed by a small stream from under the lava. The hollow is a favourite picnic stop among locals, since it offers shelter from the wind.

Snæfellsjökull National Park is perfect for exploring the adventurous world of the ocean, coastline and beach, seabirds and other life in and around the sea in Snæfellsnes. Allthough the marine factor is the pride of the Park, it is also a marvel for those interested in geology - and especially volcanology. Conditions for bird watching are good; birdlife is abundant both by the coast and in the lowlands. The national park, inaugurated in 2001, extends down from the glacier and volcano to cover the entire western tip of Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Snæfellsjökull glacier lies atop a 1446m-high (4744-ft.) volcano that last erupted around the year 250. Jules Verne, in his 1864 sci-fi novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, made Snæfellsjökull the entry portal for a scientific expedition to the earth's core. In the Halldór Laxness novel Under the Glacier, Snæfellsjökull inspires an almost hallucinatory religious transformation in a small Snæfellsnes community. Snæfellsjökull glacier is famous for the great powers and energy that many spiritually minded people sense when close to it. It is said to be one of the seven great energy centres of the earth. Arnarstapi was an important trading post in the past and had a much bigger population than it has now. The cliffs along the coastline are occupied by myriads of birds, kittiwakes, fulmars and razorbills and many others nest in the area. There is quite a large arctic tern colony in the village itself. A walk along the coastline is recommended to gaze birds and magnificent lava formations. Three blowholes, connected with the sea, open up on the way. A sculpture of Bardur Snaefellsas by Ragnar Kjartansson stands by the beach at Arnarstapi. The Fish & Chips food truck in Arnarstapi serves great fish!

Djupalonssandur is a beautiful pebbled beach, with a series of rocks of mysterious form emerging from the ocean. It is one of the few areas that lead down to the sea along this coast with its high dramatic cliffs. Watch out for the famous ghosts roaming the place! The rests of a shipwreck can be seen on the beach. On the beach there are also big stones which people tried to lift and test their strength in the days of the fishing stations: Fully Strong 154 kg, Half-Strong 100 kg, Weakling 54 kg and Bungler 23 kg. Weakling marked the frontier of wimphood, any man who couldn't lift it was deemed unsuitable for a life as a fisherman.

The beach near the farm Ytri-Tunga is a well-known refuge for seals that come to rest on the large scattered rocks. The best time to see seals there is in June and July. Once you arrive at the car park, signs will give you some indications on the different types of seals you can see. The most common are grey seals and calf seals, but there are also other species.

Ólafsvík is one of Iceland's best launch points for whale-watching, with a success rate around 97%. The most common sightings, however, are minke whales, which are 7m to 8m (23-26 ft.) long and only flash their backs for a few quick breaths. Dolphins turn up on two out of three occasions and put on a better show. Lucky passengers see orcas (aka killer whales), sperm whales, or blue whales. We have sometimes seen whales both from the shore near Ólafsvík as well as from Arnarstapi.

Natural Hot Pots in Snæfellsnes: The pool Landbrotalaug is a well hidden secret. It is located at the most eastern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and can only fit 2-3 people. But don’t worry about that. That is exactly what makes it so special and romantic. The temperature in the pool is about 36 – 40°C, excellent for bathing. Other nice hot pots in Snæfellsnes are by Stóra Hraun and Raudamelur. The Lysuholl swimming pool also has naturally carbonated, geothermal water. Rich in minerals and considered healthy and healing, just like the natural hot pots. Hreppslaug swimming pool, which was built in 1928, has water from hot springs close by led directly into the pool It is preserved as a cultural heritage.
