Our Neighborhood

Santos-o-Velho and neighboring Lapa are one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Lisbon, it’s an up and coming trendy neighborhood where you can find the most peace and quiet in the city. Santos-o-Velho is located between the historic downtown Lisbon center and Belém, and although the subway doesn't pass by, there are buses and trams.  Santos-o-Velho is just 2 minutes away from the iconic Estrela Church (“Basilica da Estrela”) and 10 min walk from Cais do Sodré. It’s also close to Bairro Alto, the centre of nightlife, where you can find many popular bars and clubs. In the neighborhood we can also explore the Jardim da Estrela and Tapada das Necessidades, two gardens that are certainly worth visiting.

BASÍLICA DA ESTRELA - Estrela Church It’s one of the most beautiful monuments in Lisbon, both inside and out. It was one of the last great baroque churches, with an interior covered in marble. It’s known for its huge nativity scene by sculptor Machado de Castro, and for the tomb of Queen Maria I. The rooftop is open to visitors, who get a close-up view of the dome and bell towers, and look over the neighborhood all the way to the towers of Amoreiras and the castle. Right in front of the Basilica da Estrela, laid out in 1842, this neighborhood park maintains the romantic atmosphere of the time. It’s frequented by people of all ages, who relax in the shade or in the sun, as children play around the ponds.

At Praça do Comércio (or Terreiro do Paço) you can enjoy the unique light of the city. Relax on the terraces and enjoy the walks under the arcades, with traditional cafes and restaurants. In the center of the square is the statue of King D. José I, a meeting point for the crowds that pass by daily, coming from the cacilheiros that connect the two banks of the Tagus. Experience the cultural initiatives that Lisbon has to offer at Pátio da Galé and visit the Lisbon Story Center museum, where you can relive the city's history, especially the 1755 earthquake. Climb to the top of Rua Augusta Arch and see panoramic views over downtown, the Portuguese pavement, and the Tagus. The ticket costs 3€ and can be bought on site or if you want to avoid queues, buy it on the Visit Lisboa website. Terreiro do Paço is also the ideal place to welcome in the New Year, with concerts, music, fireworks and entertainment guaranteed. The Interpretative Center of the History of Cod, one of the attractions of Lisbon’s riverfront, in Terreiro do Paço tells the story why the Portuguese sailed for months on end for the purposes of catching a particular type of fish – cod. The Centre pays homage to this fish as a symbol of the food, culture and history of a country that has had a global outlook for centuries. It will recall the stories of generations of sailors and fishermen and explain the temperament of a people who are always ready to share what they have and to go to the far corners of the world to find what they lack. Throughout the various sections of the exhibition, visitors will explore the beginning of the odyssey of a people who set sail for the ‘seas at the end of the world’, discover how the myth of the ‘faithful friend’ at table came about and examine the future of cod, its consumption, how it is fished and new ways in which it can be cooked. FREE Children up to 5 years old. From 10 am to 7pm -

Conceived in the 16th century by Francisco Arruda, the Belém Tower consists of a tower facing the axis of the Tagus River. At the time of its construction, the tower was located on an island (200 meters from the bank of the Tagus River) and controlled the approach of boats to Lisbon. Over time and with the displacement of the river and land, the tower ended up being on the right bank of the Tagus, where Avenida Brasília is located today. The exterior decoration shows Arab and Venetian influences in the balconies and verandas. Inside, the decor is much more austere. The name, Belém, comes from a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém, which later gave way to the Jerónimos Monastery. It is worth visiting the Torre de Belém, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and contemplating fabulous views over the Tagus and the city of Lisbon.

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara is a garden with a panoramic view across the city to St. George's Castle and central Lisbon. A map made of tiles marks all the distinctive buildings, and the lower geometric garden contains busts of heroes and gods from Greco-Roman mythology, such as Minerva and Ulysses. Next to the garden is the Gloria Elevator, a funicular that has been taking passengers up and down the hill between the center of the city (Restauradores Square) and Bairro Alto since 1885. Across the street is the "Solar do Vinho do Porto" (Port Wine Institute), an 18th-century building where you can sample more than 300 different Ports, including some of the rarer vintages that date as far as 1937. You can order by the glass or bottle, and can drink at the bar or in comfortable armchairs in the sitting room.

Take a ride on one of Lisbon’s most iconic lifts (elevadores). Its unique structure and the amazing view from the top, make it one of the city’s busiest tourist attractions. The Elevador de Santa Justa is one of the city’s most famous sights. Designed by Mesnier du Ponsard, it was originally called the Ascensor Ouro-Carmo. It connects Rua do Ouro to Largo do Carmo via a neogothic-style structure completely unlike any of the other elevadores in the city. The lifts themselves, made of wood elegantly decorated with brass, evoke a journey in time as they ascend and descend towards the most exclusive areas of the city. At the top of the tower is one of the best viewing points in the city, providing a splendid panorama of Baixa, Castelo, the Tagus and also the impressive ruins of the church of the Convento do Carmo. It’s worth a ride to feel a surge of emotion at the view which extends before your eyes.

The Portas do Sol Viewpoint offers us the best perspective on the Historic District of Alfama. Overlooking the lace-lined streets of the neighbourhood, it stretches out in brick, long and narrow, from Largo das Portas do Sol where there is also another small terrace on an esplanade, on your left, and a higher one on your right. We walk inside the viewpoint, greeted by the Statue of São Vicente by the sculptor Raúl Xavier that overlooks the Church of Santiago and the Azurara Palace. We are precisely on the south side of Colina do Castelo overlooking the Alfama Valley. On the left we can see the architectural symbols of Colina de São Vicente de Fora: Church of São Vicente and National Pantheon.

And when you walk through the door and go up the stairs, you can't believe that you're suddenly in an Arab courtyard of a Moroccan rihad, the bathrooms look like they came from an opera theater and the vegetation from a tropical country. Walking around here and discovering the past seems like something out of an Eça de Queirós book. Located in front of the National Museum of Ancient Art, Catch me is a restaurant/ rooftop bar literally overlooking the Tagus, with fantastic views over the city and the river. During the day you can enjoy show cooking, have meals and cocktails, at night you can dance on DJ Sets. In winter, the terrace remains attractive, warm and comfortable, with heaters and blankets. Also noteworthy is the list of creative cocktails, very varied and original.

A cool spot to have a drink and dance! The inspiration is the actress Louise Brooks (Lulu) and those crazy 20s of the past, which can now be repeated. The signature cocktails are named after women like Jane Fonda (with rum, fig liqueur and coffee, for 9 euros) or Cindy Lauper (rum, pineapple and stout, also for 9 euros) and national singers like Ágata (muscatel, orange , pineapple and sparkling wine, for 7 euros) and Lena d'Água (arbutus, honey and basil, for 8 euros). There are dishes like Duck & Waffle, with duck confit, fried quail egg and waffle, which they think would be “Louise's favorite – compulsive – dish”. The bar will also have a DJ area, which could soon become a good place to dance in the city.
