Closest little stop from The Barn (a jaunt partly way around The Lake to the East, or across if you dare to drive on ice in the winter) for basic groceries, liquor, treats, and gas. Sometimes in the summer there is a Codfadders food truck parked there.

Probably the crustiest little convenience store you will ever have the pleasure of visiting. Worth it for the Jone’s Soda slush machine alone! Then hang out at the all-wheels park next door with your skateboard, scooter, or roller blades. You can also buy a fishing license and bait here.

Enjoy Pembina river with great sandy spots to pretend you are “on the beach!” Drive just past Manola to the bridge and there is parking available on both sides with a short walk to the river. Bring sunscreen and a beach umbrella, you can also easily get there from Barrhead if you want to get snacks before or after.
There is also a way to access the river just down the highway from “the barn” but we don’t like to recommend it because it can be a danger to pull off and on the highway with vehicles, and the riverbank to walk down is quite steep.

De Herdt Gardens is a family operated garden center since 1998 by Koen and Inge De Herdt. Their daughter Elieneke is a journeyman baker and Canada’s first ever Young Bakery Hopeful. She specializes in bringing the taste of Belgium to Canada. The unique artisan bakery and cafe located inside the garden centre is a wonderful place to spend time. Incredible succulents to take home, Fresh vegetables for purchase including “live” lettuce. Great gifts and special event location too!

Depending on the season you may want to have protection from mosquitoes and other bugs, as well as hats and sunscreen, or very warm winter gear if you plan to sled, skate, or ice fish. There is the rare potential to run into a bear or cougar in the bush, or more likely a moose so be aware, keep your head up and make some noise while walking. Bear spray can be borrowed from hosts.

There are 2 grocery stores in Barrhead (less than 20kms away), and a few choices of places to eat but there is plenty of room in the fridge too. If there’s something you need in the kitchen check with the hosts first as the Barn is generously equipped.
