Best Paloma, ever. Take the long and winding road to Driftwood; this hidden gem sits in a field of wild Sotol. Cocktails crafted with precision not commonly found in this neck of the woods, Desert Door beckons you for a long afternoon of learning and libations. The Sotol slingers behind the tile bar will gladly educate you on the humble Sotol plant - easily mistaken for a desert scrub, the Texans at Desert Door Distillery will make you stand up and take notice of this smoky, tangy spirit with undertones of mescal and wild agave. Tours available most days but locals come out here to hang out together with live music on the patio and top shelf local bites from Lo Salvaje food truck - think street tacos meets haute cuisine with a wild game flair.

Best place for a beer at dusk. It's not really a bar - only serving beer and wine. It's not really a restaurant, but the recently opened Deli Llama, has some awesome sandwiches and snacks to balance the brews. It is an expansive overlook to take in a spectacular hill country sunset and do a lot of nothing in the company of donkeys and llamas. Local favorite and one-of-kind kind of place.

Best place to meet a local. Live music, huge open air pavillion, seating under the trees and great prices. This hill country honky-tonk meets pool hall is a regular happy hour hangout for locals and part-timers alike. They shake a great gin martini and regularly have Buffalo Trace behind the bar. if you know, you know.

Best Texas wines on tap. Have a seat on the square for people watching, wine tasting and noshing on spanish-inspired dishes at the best little wine shop in Wimbo. If you're craving a top notch Hill Country wines but want to stay local, Los Olivos is what you're looking for. Live music on weekends ; Sample selections from all over the hill country and discover some wines you never knew you'd love. Excellent menu for lunch and dinner plus a wide range of snacks. My favorite rest stop for a day of wandering the square.

Just about the newest locals fave on the square, Ranch Brand has their own label distilled liquors and daily cocktail specials. It's a very relaxed vibe spot that feels like hanging out in a rancher's living room. Great spot, plenty of outdoor seating. The bar staff is always friendly and the cocktails are really one of a kind. Try it. You'll like.

Eat Wimberley

Best Wedge Salad with a View. Tucked back away from the road at RR 12 and River Rd. is The Leaning Pear, one of Wimberley’s nicest spots for lunch or dinner. Favorites here are wood fired pizza, chicken and grits, vegetable curry and crab cakes, but for me their wedge salad with creamy blue cheese, crisp tortilla strips, smoky bacon and sweet, chewy dried figs is simply the best. Built on a bluff over Cypress Creek with a large outdoor patio, there’s plenty to like about this place. Everything on the menu at Leaning Pear is good (check out the frozen ancho dark chocolate terrine!) and if you’re lucky enough to be here mid-week, take advantage of half-price bottles on Wine Wednesday. Slightly upscale dining with some outdoor seating; locals favorite. everything here is top notch, except sometimes the service. Beer and wine only. Ask to sit in the treehouse. Favorites: wedge salad, chicken and grits, the trout and the curry; ancho chile terrine for dessert. Closed Monday, Tuesday and Sunday after 3pm. Best bartenders in Wimberley. Decidedly upscale menu with prices to match; Housed in a 1900s cabin, the structure was taken apart board by board and reassembled on the Wimberley Square in 1996. Big romance vibes on their sculpture garden; locals favorite to start or end the night. Excellent cocktails; get the fried olives. if you know, you know. Best gas station food. The shamrock gas station across from HEB on RR 12 has a huge taco menu. Frankly, the quality fluctuates with whoever is at the flat top, but it’s a good bet that you’ll get a good one. Indoor and outdoor gas station vibe seating.

Discover Wimberley

Best old timey town around. Step back into the days when people built Main Street facades for tourist to get a sugary taste of the old west. 7A Ranch Resort is a Wimberley institution, started in 1948 by Mr and Mrs Raymond L. Czichos with five rock cottages on seven acres. Since then, 7A has grown into a 142-acre family vacation destination. A stroll through the dusty streets of Pioneer Town is a nostalgic family tradition for many of us that grew up coming to the river every summer. While admittedly a bit dated, Pioneer Town has a very cool bottle house (yes, constructed of thousands of bottles), a classic ice cream parlor, a lovely old west chapel with stained glass and plenty of kitsch to keep you hee-hawing. (7A also offers day passes with river access, see website for details).

Best scenic drive that takes less than 15 mins. Drive along the banks of the Blanco River and soak in some of the nature that Wimberley is known for. Take 2325 into town where it merges with RR 12. Turn right at River Rd. and follow it down. The Great Wimberley Flood of 2015 wiped out dozens of towering cypress trees and left devastation, damage and death and it's wake. Our town motto, Wimberley Strong, was proved that year as thousand of volunteers came to Wimberley -- feeding residents, clearing land, shoveling mud, washing clothes and sorting through tons of mud-soaked possessions that washed out from homes and scattered across the area in front yards, roadways and tree tops. The land continues to heal, but it will be decades before the cypress trees outgrow their broken, bare branches and twisted trunks.

Not exactly the secret little swimming hole some Texans might remember, Blue Hole has grown up into a full-fledged tourist attraction with admission fees and reservations required. Swimming starts on weekends in May, but if you plan to take a dip, be sure to have your details straight before you go. More than just swimming, Blue Hole Park Trail Loop is perfect for families, beginning hikers and casual walkers with four miles of wide, flat trails. The 126 acre park was purchased by the City of Wimberley in 2005 and through impressive fund raising efforts, the project was completed in 2015 and includes approximately 4.0 miles of trails, picnic areas, a community pavilion, playscape, basketball court, sand volleyball court, amphitheater, and the Blue Hole Swimming Area. The Blue Hole property possesses what is now becoming a much more rare ecosystem and supports many species of birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians, and mammals. Native grasses, wildflowers and groves of varieties of central Texas trees and shrubs are decoratively combined with rocky outcrops, creating a scenic and special environment. SWIMMING SEASON: Blue Hole is open for swimming starting Weekends in May, everyday Memorial Day - Labor Day, and weekends in September. RESERVATIONS: Reservations are required. There are 2 time slots for swimming (9 am - 1 pm, 2 pm - 6 pm) but you can reserve both and stay all day. Our reservation system opens March 1st. This one-of-a-kind 46,000 square foot store is located on the former site of Bowen Intermediate School at 14501 RR12, Wimberley, Texas, 78676. The Wimberley H-E-B is open from 6 a.m. until midnight seven days a week and employs 140 Partners, 80 percent of which reside in the Wimberley area. To celebrate the opening 1,000 custom Wimberley reusable shopping bags designed by local students will be given away to customers on a first come, first served basis. The new store builds on H-E-B’s core strengths of everyday low prices and fresh foods by providing local produce and artisan foods within the atmosphere of a neighborhood grocery. With local goods alongside H-E-B favorites like a full-service Meat Market and fresh, hand-rolled sushi, the Wimberley H-E-B features everything Hill Country shoppers want and need. “The Wimberley H-E-B is an incredibly special store for us—we reused memorable items from Bowen Intermediate School, like the scoreboard and gym floor, to pay homage to the store’s roots, and we worked with local artists to create custom pieces that reflect the beauty of Wimberley,” said Leslie Sweet, H-E-B Director of Public Affairs for Central Texas. “City leaders and residents worked with us every step of the way to let us know what they want in this store, from design, to fresh foods, to everyday low prices, and how we could make it as special as the community it serves. We hope the entire community will join us on opening day to see this uniquely Wimberley store.” CELEBRATING THE ARTISTRY OF WIMBERLEY Located just outside the heart of downtown Wimberley, the new store celebrates the history and artistry of the charming Hill Country town. The store design reflects the timeless nature of the community, and H-E-B worked with local artisans to craft items for the store using regional materials. o Doug Moreland, a local musician and chainsaw artist, carved a tree fallen in the Memorial Day Floods into a custom bike rack which is positioned in front of the store. o Wimberley Glassworks created handblown light fixtures used as the checkout stations lights to indicate when they are open. The glass changes color when the lights are turned on. o H-E-B sponsored the Wimberley Valley Arts & Cultural Alliance “Bootiful Wimberley” program, celebrating the city’s reputation as an art center through displays of custom boot sculptures. The custom-designed H-E-B Boot features images of fresh produce and rests atop the iconic red H-E-B shopping cart, painted by local artist Lynn Meyers. REPURPOSING CELEBRATED MATERIALS The Wimberley H-E-B is incorporating several repurposed items from Bowen Intermediate School into the store’s design to pay homage to the location’s roots. o The school’s jungle gym was repurposed into outdoor seating utilizing artwork commissioned by Wimberley students, and is located on the outdoor patio area. o The gym floor is used throughout the store in décor and signage, and still features the original tape markings. o The school’s softball scoreboard was saved and is used in the Produce department to keep a tally on the amount of organic products offered in the store. o The school bleachers were used to build the chef’s hat at the Cooking Connection station, the aisle number signage, and on the walls throughout the store. o The corrugated tin roof from the school is used as decorative siding throughout the store. - more - LOCAL PRODUCTS On June 12, H-E-B hosted a Grower’s Gathering with local growers to ensure the best of Wimberley is showcased in the store. Local products available include fresh produce from Lily Pad Farm (San Marcos) and Bella Verdi Farms (Dripping Springs); wines from Fall Creek Winery (Driftwood), Twin Springs Winery (Driftwood), Wimberley Valley Winery (Driftwood) and Duchman Winery (Driftwood); and flowers and plants from nurseries like Klepac Growers (Blanco) and Plant Odyssey (Kyle). COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS AND EDUCATION In the spring of 2015 H-E-B and Wimberley Independent School District hosted an art contest for K-12 students to create original artwork they felt represented the beauty and nature of Wimberley. Out of nearly 150 submissions eight grand prizewinners were selected to have their art showcased on the Wimberley H-E-B reusable shopping bag. Top winning contestants received a $1,000 or $500 scholarship toward their education fund. In addition, 15 of the submissions are used on the repurposed jungle gym outdoor patio seating. COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP The store will feature energy efficient elements like refrigerated cases with added doors that could lower energy consumption by as much as 70 percent; an abundance of large, high windows that will conserve the use of electrical energy and provide natural lighting for a comfortable shopping experience; LED energy-saving lights throughout the store and parking lot; and a water quality system to collect rainwater and condensation for re-use in irrigating the landscape. In addition, building materials from Bowen Intermediate School we reused and repurposed to reduce waste and enhance the quality of the interior environment. To reflect H-E-B and Wimberley’s commitment to sustainability, the store is pursuing and expects to achieve LEED certification. SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY To introduce H-E-B’s Spirit of Giving to Wimberley, H-E-B selected four community organizations to each receive a $1,000 gift and two community organizations to each receive a $500 gift at the store’s groundbreaking in September 2014. The five organizations each work to support the culture and well-being of the Wimberley community in one of H-E-B’s five focus areas. The five organizations were Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance (Arts), Wimberley Crisis Bread Basket (Hunger Relief), Wimberley Village Library (Education) and Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue (Diversity). Wimberley Valley Watershed for Jacob’s Well (Environment) and Friends of Blue Hole (Environment) each received $500.

Shop The Square

The best little vintage boot store on the square is also where you can find the coolest shop cats in town, or can you? The feline residents of this fun and funky shop are sometimes reclusive but browse around, look through the racks and there between vintage hip and modern swing duds, you just might spot a chubby kitty lounging at your feet.

Best place to create your own souvenir. Ceremony is a breath of fresh air in more ways than one. Roll up your sleeves, grab a container and sink your hands into some dirt at Ceremony’s planting station – pot your own plant baby to take home and cuddle or create a self-care box from plants, tinctures and oils.

Best comfy and still really cute walking shoes. Known better as "The Shoe Shop," this tiny shop with low ceilings and sunken floors, is literally packs in tons of hard-to-find, really comfy, lots of sizes walking shoes. Ladies, if you love European styles and fun leather accessories - make a stop here. Men, there's an ice cream store conveniently located next door with chairs and benches for your waiting enjoyment.

Best ice cream; strangest name. When we all scream for ice cream, look for the monsters. You might miss it, so keep an eye out for the little shop just slightly past the square (connected to Budaful Hiking). Premium ice cream with the flavors you expect from a brand like Amy's : Mexican vanilla, Texas Dirt Cake, Zilker Mint chip and Big Red plus all the usual suspects.

Your spot on the square for Mexican and southwest inspired home decor, plus a few funky finds here and there. I love going in here because there's always something new hidden around somewhere or in plain sight. This is my favorite stop for unique lighting, wood sculpture and native jewelry - and my favorite browse for vintage texas posters and mexican tiles and metal switch plates.
