The Pedernales River cascades through a steep-walled canyon over 300-million-year-old limestone to create Pedernales Falls. Riverfront property is a great place for a picnic, fishing or to go for a swim! There are also two pavilions for group events. For you hikers, a loop that zigzags 10 miles along the ridges of limestone uplifts, across trickling creeks, and to his an outstanding swimming hole. From the Wolf Mountain parking lot, follow the trail to the first junction and bear right, then left, then right again to connect the South Loop Equestrian Trail to the Juniper Ridge Trail, winding along hilltops above the Bee Creek valley. After five creek crossings, pick up the Wolf Mountain Trail, which will carry you to Bee Creek and a side path veering off into a canyon. You won’t find it on the map, but it leads to a swimming hole fed by a series of cascades. It’s spectacular. Slip from the surrounding rocks to the clear blue waters for a respite from the heat. He became the commander in chief of the Pacific during World War II and led the U.S. to victory in the Battle of Midway, the most important naval battle in U.S. history. The National Museum of the Pacific War honors him as their local hero but also pays homage, through exhibits, galleries, and gardens, to the many other men and women who were part of the war.
Throughout his career, Nimitz was widely regarded as a calm and reliable leader, and he was well-liked and respected by the men and women under his command. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Nimitz was sent to Hawaii as commander in chief and is credited with boosting the morale of the Pacific Fleet.
Plan at least 2 to 4 hours to see the Admiral Nimitz Gallery, the George H.W. Bush Gallery, and the Pacific Combat Zone exhibition. This museum is widely regarded as one of the best history museums in the United States.

Through regularly scheduled combat programs, the sights, scenes and smells of a beach-front battlefield come to life.
The Museum's Nimitz Education & Research Center's archives hold thousands of manuscripts, documents, photographs, and recorded interviews with Pacific War veterans. The collections are an invaluable resource for historians and students of Pacific War history. (By appointment only.)

JAPANESE GARDEN OF PEACE
A gift from the people of Japan to the people of the United States (8 May 1976), the Japanese Garden of Peace symbolizes the special friendship between these two countries. The garden is a tribute to Japanese Admiral Heihachiro Togo, whose leadership and strategic acumen often inspired and influenced Admiral Nimitz. The garden includes a replica of Togo’s study in Japan and also features the elements of a traditional Japanese garden including a fish pond, raked stones, and large rocks.

Honoring the individuals, ships and units who fought in the Pacific Theater. The 19th Century limestone walls that surround this solemn garden now bear plaques that recognize heroic contributions to the war effort in the Pacific. The Veterans’ Walk of Honor winds through the Courtyard, paved by bricks inscribed with additional tributes.
Multi-media exhibits, oral histories, and artifacts collected from battlefields and the home front combine with personal letters and photographs to provide an immersive and compelling museum experience. Start with open slopes bursting with wildflowers by leaving from the Pecan Flats trailhead (the first past the park entrance). The Lake Trail meanders through fields of Texas bluebonnets, orange-and-yellow firewheels, and crimson Indian paintbrush (peak bloom in April and May). In the same months, prickly pear and pencil cactus burst with yellow blossoms. Climb from the lake to pink rock islands of pre-Cambrian gneiss, where seasonal vernal pools and occasional swimming holes dot the landscape. These pools are the only place on Earth where two endemic wildflowers, grass-like rock quillwort and delicate white Edward’s Plateau cornsalad, grow. Continue onto the Woodland Trail through juniper, elm, and 15-foot-tall black persimmon trees, whose tubular white blossoms perfume the spring air. Pick up the .6-mile Connecting Trail and bear left at Pecan Flats, named for the trees arching overhead, then climb to a thousand-foot hilltop overlooking azure Inks Lake. Descend to the road to finish the 3.3-mile loop. Extend to 5.3 miles by taking the long way on the Woodland Trail, bearing right instead of left after it crosses Park Road 4. Check the weather to make sure the skies will be clear not cloudy for best results. Presentations start on time or early. You climb up a ladder to look through a VERY EXPENSIVE POWERFUL HUGE telescope. You’ll see stars and the craters on the moon. What to expect? In groups of approx. 20 w each person taking a turn, and lots of questions, this isn’t something for young children. They tend to get bored during discussion. Older kids should be interested in the subject if you expect them to enjoy the experience. No flashlights, the dark sky is preserved, your walking way is illuminated by subtle red lighting so that ultimate light contamination for telescope viewing is preserved. The building itself is a bit of a “shack” the “star of the show” (pun intended!) are the stars, comets, galaxies, and planets. This is a wonderful experience even if you aren’t typically a night owl.
Things to note; this is an outdoor trek. Wear good walking shoes and dress warmly (layer up it gets chilly). If you are a member of the Austin Astrological Society there are 29 stations where you can set up your own telescope (12.5” & 16”) there is also 1 free public night a month so check their calendar for that, other wise there are admission fees. While the Observatory is located on Canyon of The Eagles Resort you do not have to stay at the resort to visit the observatory. IT IS NOT OPEN FULL TIME SO CHECK BEFORE YOU GO. Say hello to Venus and the Moon for us

Bring fishing gear! There’s plenty to photograph and you may want to spend extra time to see it all. This wilderness area of Colorado Bend has caves to explore, Gorman Falls, 35 miles of hiking and biking trails, Spicewood Springs for swimming, and the river for kayaking and fishing. You can tour the caves on your own or go with an experienced guide. To view and photograph the 70-foot spring-fed waterfall, it’s a 3-mile round trip hike with rocky terrain.
Go underground for amazing photos at Cascade Caverns. Beneath Texas Hill Country waits corridors of natural beauty to discover on a one-hour tour. During summer months you can book a more in-depth 3- to 4- hour group spelunking tour of the lower cave system. Keep in mind that participants must be physically fit, non-claustrophobic, and able to swim.
