The Pedernales River cascades through a steep-walled canyon over 300-million-year-old limestone to create Pedernales Falls. Riverfront property is a great place for a picnic, fishing or to go for a swim! There are also two pavilions for group events. For you hikers, a loop that zigzags 10 miles along the ridges of limestone uplifts, across trickling creeks, and to his an outstanding swimming hole. From the Wolf Mountain parking lot, follow the trail to the first junction and bear right, then left, then right again to connect the South Loop Equestrian Trail to the Juniper Ridge Trail, winding along hilltops above the Bee Creek valley. After five creek crossings, pick up the Wolf Mountain Trail, which will carry you to Bee Creek and a side path veering off into a canyon. You won’t find it on the map, but it leads to a swimming hole fed by a series of cascades. It’s spectacular. Slip from the surrounding rocks to the clear blue waters for a respite from the heat. When you’re ready (or when daylight fades), follow the main trail back to the parking lot. (sic Steven Deborde, Backpacker Magazine)

Chester W. Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg and spent his early childhood years in the house that is now part of the National Museum of the Pacific War complex. He became the commander in chief of the Pacific during World War II and led the U.S. to victory in the Battle of Midway, the most important naval battle in U.S. history. The National Museum of the Pacific War honors him as their local hero but also pays homage, through exhibits, galleries, and gardens, to the many other men and women who were part of the war. Throughout his career, Nimitz was widely regarded as a calm and reliable leader, and he was well-liked and respected by the men and women under his command. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Nimitz was sent to Hawaii as commander in chief and is credited with boosting the morale of the Pacific Fleet. Plan at least 2 to 4 hours to see the Admiral Nimitz Gallery, the George H.W. Bush Gallery, and the Pacific Combat Zone exhibition. This museum is widely regarded as one of the best history museums in the United States. Pro Tip: The Japanese Garden of Peace and outdoor exhibits are all free and open to the public. There’s also the Plaza of Presidents, which honors the past U.S. presidents who served in uniform during World War I The Pacific Combat Zone features a TBM Avenger, PT-309, a scale map of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, the Museum's new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) lab, and the William P. Clements, Jr. Amphitheater's battlefield, the Pacific Combat Zone is an essential component of our educational programming. Through regularly scheduled combat programs, the sights, scenes and smells of a beach-front battlefield come to life. The Museum's Nimitz Education & Research Center's archives hold thousands of manuscripts, documents, photographs, and recorded interviews with Pacific War veterans. The collections are an invaluable resource for historians and students of Pacific War history. (By appointment only.) PLAZA OF PRESIDENTS The Plaza of the Presidents features ten monuments honoring presidents who served during World War II. Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman served as Commanders‐in‐Chief. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, James E. Carter, Jr., Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush served in uniform. JAPANESE GARDEN OF PEACE A gift from the people of Japan to the people of the United States (8 May 1976), the Japanese Garden of Peace symbolizes the special friendship between these two countries. The garden is a tribute to Japanese Admiral Heihachiro Togo, whose leadership and strategic acumen often inspired and influenced Admiral Nimitz. The garden includes a replica of Togo’s study in Japan and also features the elements of a traditional Japanese garden including a fish pond, raked stones, and large rocks. MEMORIAL COURTYARD Honoring the individuals, ships and units who fought in the Pacific Theater. The 19th Century limestone walls that surround this solemn garden now bear plaques that recognize heroic contributions to the war effort in the Pacific. The Veterans’ Walk of Honor winds through the Courtyard, paved by bricks inscribed with additional tributes. Multi-media exhibits, oral histories, and artifacts collected from battlefields and the home front combine with personal letters and photographs to provide an immersive and compelling museum experience. Imagine island hopping with American troops as they fought to ensure the Nation's freedom and battled the enemy for control of the Pacific.

Full of rolling hills and hidden pools, this is a beautiful introduction to the Hill Country for back packers and hikers. Start with open slopes bursting with wildflowers by leaving from the Pecan Flats trailhead (the first past the park entrance). The Lake Trail meanders through fields of Texas bluebonnets, orange-and-yellow firewheels, and crimson Indian paintbrush (peak bloom in April and May). In the same months, prickly pear and pencil cactus burst with yellow blossoms. Climb from the lake to pink rock islands of pre-Cambrian gneiss, where seasonal vernal pools and occasional swimming holes dot the landscape. These pools are the only place on Earth where two endemic wildflowers, grass-like rock quillwort and delicate white Edward’s Plateau cornsalad, grow. Continue onto the Woodland Trail through juniper, elm, and 15-foot-tall black persimmon trees, whose tubular white blossoms perfume the spring air. Pick up the .6-mile Connecting Trail and bear left at Pecan Flats, named for the trees arching overhead, then climb to a thousand-foot hilltop overlooking azure Inks Lake. Descend to the road to finish the 3.3-mile loop. Extend to 5.3 miles by taking the long way on the Woodland Trail, bearing right instead of left after it crosses Park Road 4. THIS IS A REALLY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE! The Observatory is about a 40 minute drive from Vagabond’s but it’s not for everybody. You don’t have to be serious astronomers to love or appreciate the observatory. The guides are well versed at handling tours for both hobbyists & enthusiasts. It’s both romantic and fascinating. Check the weather to make sure the skies will be clear not cloudy for best results. Presentations start on time or early. You climb up a ladder to look through a VERY EXPENSIVE POWERFUL HUGE telescope. You’ll see stars and the craters on the moon. What to expect? In groups of approx. 20 w each person taking a turn, and lots of questions, this isn’t something for young children. They tend to get bored during discussion. Older kids should be interested in the subject if you expect them to enjoy the experience. No flashlights, the dark sky is preserved, your walking way is illuminated by subtle red lighting so that ultimate light contamination for telescope viewing is preserved. The building itself is a bit of a “shack” the “star of the show” (pun intended!) are the stars, comets, galaxies, and planets. This is a wonderful experience even if you aren’t typically a night owl. Things to note; this is an outdoor trek. Wear good walking shoes and dress warmly (layer up it gets chilly). If you are a member of the Austin Astrological Society there are 29 stations where you can set up your own telescope (12.5” & 16”) there is also 1 free public night a month so check their calendar for that, other wise there are admission fees. While the Observatory is located on Canyon of The Eagles Resort you do not have to stay at the resort to visit the observatory. IT IS NOT OPEN FULL TIME SO CHECK BEFORE YOU GO. Although famous for its spectacular displays of fall color throughout the park, Lost Maples’ scenic trails appeal to hikers year-round. This moderately challenging, 4.6-mile, round-trip hike traverses rugged hills, sinks into deep canyons, and skirts the Sabinal River and gentle streams. Start from the East-West trailhead to pass through stands of Uvalde bigtooth maples. Go left at the fork, crossing Can Creek to begin a clockwise loop on the West Trail. (If you take the East Trail, you’ll find some of the park’s best autumn color, as red oaks and Uvalde bigtooth maples turn a warm palette of reds, yellows, and oranges.) After Primitive Campsite D, you’ll begin a steep ascent of 220 feet to a grassy plateau. Soak in 360-degree views of undulating wooded terrain before trekking down into Mystic Canyon, marked by spring-fed pools and stair-stepped ravines adorned with colorful maples. The trail eventually turns east to follow Can Creek, which flows into several deep ponds fringed with cattails. From here, turn south on the East-West trail for an easy trek back to the trailhead.

The largest wildflower farm in the US! Head to Wildseed Farms to see over 200 acres of wildflowers. Fields of poppies and bluebonnets meet the street (22 acres worth). Once inside Wildseed Farms, walk the half-mile of trails in the display gardens. The path is lined with benches to take a break and sit with wildflowers, butterflies, and hummingbirds all around. The highlight of Wildseed Farms is the walking trail, a quarter-mile trail that includes a butterfly garden, water features, windmills and sculptures, and of course, wildflower fields to photograph. There’s live music, parades, beautiful exhibits, arts and crafts vendors, contests, shopping, and of course lots of food. Burnet is also home to a number of parks, museums, and the famous Eagle Eye Observatory. This festival is so much fun to attend but after you’ve had tour fun it’s nice to escape the chaos and return to our peaceful patio for a relaxing evening to put your feet up and whined down with some Farmhouse Vineyards Wine and charcuterie

Retail

Eclectic creative collection of art, furniture, rugs, sculpture, rugs, vintage items, "smalls" and "stuff" -an emphasis on mid century modern, but enough a mix to keep everybody interested. One of the more interesting shopping experiences in JC, this is not your inexpensive bargain basement but the curated pieces are interesting and worth the price. It's hit or miss whether you find that special piece that speaks to you, but it's definitely worth a look.

City/town information

It may be small, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of amazing things to do in Johnson City Texas! Johnson City is located about an hour west of Austin, on the banks of the Pedernales River. It’s about three and a half hours west of Houston, a little over an hour north of San Antonio, and just under four hours south of Dallas. As of the last census, there were just 1,656 people in Johnson City. But despite its size, it’s home to a state park, an incredible children’s museum, a historical park, a safari, and multiple wineries. If you’re planning a trip to hill country, I highly recommend you visit Johnson City Texas as part of your trip!

Some highlights of this unique little German town include; Oktoberfest, Nimitz Museum, Food & Wine Fest & The Oldest Continuing County Fair in Texas. It's filled w quaint shops and fabulous dining but all this "tre chic" entertainment isn't cheap, so play a day in Fredericksburg but stay in more affordable JC where you will find equally talented artisans and makers, chefs and vineyards at a more affordable offering

Calling itself "The Gateway to the Hill Country" Dripping Springs has become wedding central here in Hill Country. We often host wedding guests from Austin looking for a half way point that's fun and centrally located. Lots of great bird watching and natural beauty in this area.
