Swimming holes

FRENCHMEN’S HOLE | Sunday River, ME A giant pothole below a 10-foot waterfall was a local best-kept secret for years, but now savvy swimmers know it lies just a few miles beyond Sunday River Ski Resort. There are even a few picnic tables here, so pack a lunch and stay for the day. Get there: From the junction of ME 5, ME 26, and US-2 in downtown Bethel, take the combined highway ME 5 north, ME 26 north and US-2 east, heading towards the Sunday River Ski Resort and the town of Newry. Travel on this highway for 2.7 miles and take a left onto Sunday River Rd, which is the access road for the ski resort. Travel on Sunday River Rd for 2.1 miles and you will approach a fork in the road. Veer right and continue another 1.0 mile to another fork. Fork right again, and travel an additional 4.4 miles along Sunday River Rd (turning into dirt at mile 3.1). Next you will want to take a left onto a dirt road that immediately travels over two old bridges. Just after the bridges, take a right and follow this new dirt road for 0.6 mile and the large parking pull offs will be on the right. Beautiful and easy walk for kids up to the waterslides. This is a great place to swim after hiking Old Speck or Puzzle! This area is managed by the Mahoosuc Land Trust who rebuilt the parking area in 2013. The area can be busy on the weekends and parking is not permitted on the side of Bear River Road.

Outdoor water adventures

Do you want some outdoor adventures? There are places to fish on the river. Take our 2 kayaks, or bring your own and take a ride down the river. We have tubes also available so you can just relax and gently glide down the river.... So much fun!!! Don't forget water shoes, extra water, a packed lunch, and your sunscreen! 3 different take in and out spots... each approximately 3 hours depending on how long you stop for picnic etc. Will need 2 vehicles, on at drop off one at pick up location, or try an Uber or Lyft... or a cab. We have never taken Uber here, so I don't know how quick to respond they are... 1st Location This one is from Meadow Road, in Shelbourne NH. Short drive from our cabin. https://goo.gl/maps/CFpYhxdcVYGPXe4V8 2nd location Bridge Street, Gilead to Davis Park in Bethel... https://goo.gl/maps/1C8n4U18zMBeN7X89 3rd location Davis Park, Bethel to Hanover Boat Launch, Hanover We haven't tried this location, but it was suggested to us. https://goo.gl/maps/pgTjKajiM6NgF1yN7

If you'd prefer to just make reservations and let someone else give you a ride to the drop off location for tubing or kayaking, you must check this place out. I suggest reserving a time and tubes/kayaks as early in advance as possible. This summer has been particularly busy.

This is a popular trail for birding and hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are March through October. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

This is one that we hiked 3 years ago, with our dog Marley. We didn't get an early start, so we hiked up... and bussed down. Magnificent views. I'm old... I would say not an easy hike.
