The Haapiti district of Moorea is on the southwest coast of the island and has a warm, azure lagoon protected by a coral reef about 1 mile offshore. Surfers catch waves on the left near a reef pass or an opening in the coral reef. This place is very popular with surfers looking for a place whose wild nature is still very present and the warm inhabitants, the lagoon and the mountains of Moorea is a landscape that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

From the island of Tahiti, two ferry companies serve the island of Moorea. These are Terevau and Aremiti (see their timetables on facebook). Prices are almost similar and boarding is from the ferry port. You can get there from the city center on foot. Count: • 1500 xpf (12 €) for a one-way pedestrian rate, • 3000 xpf (24 €) for a pedestrian return trip, • around 8500 xpf (€ 70) for a round trip by car. Note that prices vary depending on the length of the car. • There is no need to reserve the pedestrian ticket. You can buy it direct at the dock before taking the ferry, • It is generally strongly advised to book the transfer by car, especially on weekends and for public holidays, at the risk that all of the car spaces on the ferry will be taken, • The aremiti has a lot more car space and is generally better at sea (by its size). However, it’s a little longer, about an hour, • The Terevau has a limited number of car spaces. Due to its small size, the ferry moves much more at sea. The crossing is however faster (around 40 minutes). In fact, since the end of 2019, the Armiti 6 (new boat) has been commuting between Tahiti and Moorea in 25 minutes! How to get around on the island of Moorea? The tour of the island measures approximately 60 km. It is therefore very complicated to go around on foot. Several possibilities are possible: • The bravest can rent a bike to tour the island. Count around 2000 xpf (16 €) for the day, • If you are less motivated and want to preserve the environment, you can rent electric bikes from E-BIKE Moorea for 5000 xpf (40 €) per day, • It is possible to rent a scooter. Count around 5000 xpf (40 €) for the day rental, • Finally, you can also rent a car from the different rental companies on the island. Count 7000/8000 xpf (60/70 €) for a car. (Avis, europcar, Ecocar) Avis (tel. 800/331-1212 or 56.32.68; www.avis.com) and Europcar (tel. 800/227-7368 or 56.34.00; www.europcar-tahiti.com) both have booths at the Vaiare ferry wharf. The local firm Albert Rent-a-Car (tel. 40.56.19.28) is the least expensive, with unlimited-kilometer rates starting at 8,000CFP (US$100/£50) for a day. Taxi . TIKI VILLAGE

The best cultural experience in French Polynesia is at Tiki Theatre Village, (tel. 40.55.02.50; www.tikivillage.pf). Founded by Olivier Briac, a Frenchman whom the local Tahitians call Le Sauvage Blanc (White Savage), it's built in the fashion of ancient Tahitian villages. This cultural center has old-style fares (houses) in which the staff demonstrates traditional tattooing, tapa-cloth making and painting, wood and stone carving, weaving, cooking, and making costumes, musical instruments, and flower crowns. There's even a "royal" house floating out on the lagoon.

SUNDAY TAHITIAN FEAST

Locals love to partake of huge ma'a Tahiti feasts on Sunday afternoon, and I join them at Ron Sage's Painapo (Pineapple) Beach ( www.painapo.com), on the southwestern coast. It's a lovely setting with tables under a natural thatched-roof restaurant (with sand floor) as well as outside under the shade of a sprawling beachside tree. Ron's all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet of traditional Tahitian foods costs 3,500CFP (US$44/£22). He also serves an à la carte menu of fresh grilled fish for 1,900CFP to 2,500CFP (US$24-US$31/£12-£16)

SAFARI TOURS

You can see the sights and learn a lot about the island on a four-wheel-drive excursion . Albert Tours and Moorea Explorer . Alex and Gheslaine Haamatearii's Inner Island Safari Tours ( intersaf@mail.pf), which will take you through the valleys, up to Belvédère Lookout, and then down to a vanilla plantation in Opunohu Valley. They explain the island's flora and fauna along the way. The best trips end with a drive around Moorea's south coast and a hike up to Atiraa Waterfall for a refreshing swim.

LAGOON EXCURSION

The full-day version of these excursions invariably includes a "motu picnic" -- a lunch of grilled fresh fish, poisson cru, and salads served on a motu (little isle) out on the reef. Quite often, the fresh fish is caught on the way. You'll have an opportunity to snorkel in the lagoon and learn how to husk a coconut. Some tours also include shark- and ray-feeding. Wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet. The cost is about 7,000CFP (US$88/£44) per person. Lagoon Explorer, Moorea Miti tours,Moorea ocean adventure…

Dolphin- & Whale-Watching

Watching and swimming with dolphins is as much a part of the Moorea experience. You also stand a good chance of seeing humpback whales offshore from July until October, when they migrate from Antarctica to calve. The best way to observe the animals in their natural habitat is on a dolphin- and whale-watching excursion led by American marine biologist Dr. Michael Poole ( www.drmichaelpoole.com)
