Sightseeing

This is a mix of my favorite top attractions and museums. We have so many interesting museums so check the guide here: https://www.kbhmuseer.dk/en/publications/ Lots of museums have free entrance for children, but check their guidelines first.
Tivoli Gardens is the world’s oldest amusement park with fun rides, hooting galleries, but it also one of the most charming places to go. Tivoli is much more than your average amusement park: They offer lots of places to eat at all price levels, a romantic park and lake area, and small cozy shops. It is open during the summer, the Halloween season and most of the wintertime – but check Tivoli.dk to be sure. Tivoli has an inside concert venue with classical music, a theatre, and an outside venue for pop and rock concerts on Fridays (April-September). There is also a small aquarium. Tivoli Food Hall: Outside Tivoli (on the corner in the right when you stand outside the main entrance), you find Tivoli Food Hall with a blend of pizza, tacos, sushi, kebab, Danish open sandwiches etc. It is a nice place, but if you are looking for a budget priced and fast meal, it is not the cheapest place in town to buy take away food 😉

The Round Tower is in the middle of the pedestrian street, Strøget, on one of the side roads to Nørreport. It is fun to climb as has a great view from the top. King Christian IV had The Round Tower built (1637-42) as thanks to the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, who died in 1601. The King wished to continue Brahe's research, and had the tower with an observatory made as part of three functions. The others are The Trinitatis Church and University Library. The latter is now used for exhibitions and accessible from the tower’s spiral walk. The outdoor platform on the top has an amazing view, but first you must walk up the spiral walk, which is 268,5 meters long at the outer wall and only 85,5 meters along the core of the building – so a tip is to walk close to the inner wall. The height of the tower is 36 m.

A Royal Experience: Changing of the Guards The Royal Lifeguards guard the Queen and her residence, Amalienborg Palace. The Royal Lifeguard was founded in 1658, and since 1785 they have had their barracks and headquarters at Rosenborg Castle. Every day from 11.30 AM to noon, they march from the barracks to Amalienborg for the changing of the guard. The parade goes through the city and it is quite a sight. Their uniforms and routes differ depending on the Queen is at home or not – although they wear the black bearskin hat all year. If you walk behind them to the end, you will also see the home of our Queen at Amalienborg (built in the 1750s) that is pretty spectacular with four symmetrical buildings in Renaissance style.

Christiansborg Palace houses the Danish Parliament, but also some beautiful areas used for representative purposes, for instance when heads of state visit Denmark. The public can get access to the representative areas including the tapestry, the ruins under the palace, the royal kitchen and the palca church. Christiansborg Palace is known for its tapestry. Moreover, the tower on the top of the building has been opened for sightseeing and there is a small restaurant there (Tårnet) with traditional Danish open sandwiches or smørrebrød.

Glyptoteket is founded by the Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). The museum has two fixed collections; one with ancient art (Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman) and the modern collection with paintings and sculptures by Gauguin, Eckersberg, Monet, Rodin, van Gogh and Degas among the most famous. Moreover, there are changing exhibitions. Spend som time in their beautiful Winter Garden. There is a glass roofed palm garden with a café. It is particularly wonderful in the late winter, where the first sun lights make you feel that it is must be a spring day. Entrance on Tuesdays is free but only to the fixed collections.

SMK is the greatest museum and I love it, but check their exhibition first. On Friday afternoons, they have occasional happenings. Take a break in their café and enjoy the view. If you have children, consider booking them into their children art workshop - that is really cool.

One of our most famous tourist attractions is the 1.25 meters tall sculpture of The Little Mermaid at Langelinie Pier. When looking at her, if can seem strange why such a small sculpture is important for us. The sculpture from 1913 is based on the fairy tale of the famous Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen (HCA) and the sculpture of The Little Mermaid was made by Edvard Eriksen after the Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen (founder of Carlsberg Beer) fell in love with the mermaid character in a ballet based on HCA’s story. The Little Mermaid statue is free to access, and it is a nice walk from Østerport Station to Langelinie (Langeliniekaj 2, 2100 København). If you use the boardwalk (Bryggebroen) to Dybbølsbro Station, you have 4 stops on the S-Train to Østerport. Or you can hop on a canal cruise as most of them sail by The Little Mermaid.

Family Attractions

Copenhagen is very children-friendly in general, but some attracted are of course especially targeted towards families. Here are my suggestions.
The Zoo in Copenhagen is indeed a unique place. Compared to other Zoos, it really stands out, which is probably because they are dedicated to activate the animals and building great houses for them. The famous Danish architect Bjarke Ingels (BIG) designed the enclosure for the pandas, and the world known British architect Norman Foster designed the Elephant House. The Arctic Ring that house the Polar Bears and Penguins (made by architechts Dall og Lindhardtsen) is also amazing.

The Blue Planet is the National Aquarium of Denmark. This family attraction is home to thousands of animals and 7 million litres of water which makes it the largest in Northern Europe. It is a great place for children, because they offer so many fun and edgy experiences. The children can pet baby sharks and hold crabs, of course under adult supervision. There major attraction is a giant aquarium with hammerhead sharks and stingrays, but the cute sea otters are probably more popular with the children. There used to be two sea otters, but in 2018, two baby otters were found sick and starved in the seashore of Alaska. The Alaska Sealife Center bottle feed them until they were well enough to be sent to Denmark. Check out Dixon and Riggs now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7toSOZ0HP4A The Blue Planet is a good experience for adults, too, because it combines entertainment and knowledge, and the buildings itself is a unique piece of architecture in a great setting surrounded by the sea. It is located 7 km away at Jacob Fortlingsvej 1, 2770 Kastrup. Go by metro (you must change metro line) or bike. Taxi is easy with children and only 10 minutes, the costs is some $30.

This paint-your-own-pottery place is good for children, but also popular for adult! It is really a nice place, it is like a café where you can order coffee, tea and soft drinks, but not food. You sit and paint and talk and time flies. IMPORTANT! You need one week in Copenhagen, because your pottery is sent to an oven, and you have to return to pick up your masterpiece after a week! It is necessary to book in advance (often at least two weeks before) either online https://www.creative-space.dk/ or call +45 3379 0072. Besides this place in Frederiksberg, there is also a shop in Østerbro.

Swimming in the Harbour

Your location is 50 meter / 160 feet from the waterfront, and being near the water is a unique and wonderful feature of Islands Brygge. When Copenhagen gets too hot in the summer, going swimming is the best pleasure in town. Some locals jump in the water from the nearest pier, but swimming is restricted to the baths and beaches.
Copenhagen Harbour Bath is free to use and open from May 15 - September 15. There are five pools, where two of them are for children. The water is really clean and the quality is frequently controlled by the authorities. There are three towers to jump from, that are 1, 3 and 5 meters. The bath is connected to the large waterfront park where you can picnic, play Pétanque, beach Volley or just hang out. There is also a section of the park called the "The Quit Park". if you want to read of enjoy the view in silence.

This Harbour Beach is a 3 minutes walk away, and it attracts all kind's of people in the summer. It's free to use. The water quality is checked frequently like in the harbour baths, but there are no life guards, so you swim at your own risk! People use it all year, but I recommend that you only go swimming outside the season in the safe surrounding of one of the many clubs for winter swimming.

There is also a harbour bath on the other side of the canal right beside Copenhagen Mall (Fisketorvet). They have life guards in the opening season during the day time. Copenhagen Port has 3 harbour baths, but I prefer the local bath due to its closeness, and because it has the best and coziest atmosphere.

In the winter, the Copenhagen Habour Bath is open for Winter-Swimming and Sauna Therapy - even if the canal freezes over. Check out the options for tourists as some access require membership. They do have some open pre-membership courses for brave souls that want to try it out. I hear it should be healthy, although I'm afraid that I have no personal experience with winter-swimming.

Places to Eat

There are so many good places to eat in Copenhagen, and especially close to the apartment. The best place for eating is the Meatpackning District (Kødbyen) if you are a foodie in search of genuine quality. I made a separate guide for it (Look for Kødbyen in "Surrounding neighbourhoods").
Right beside Nørreport station, you find the food market halls in the place of Copenhagen’s former vegetable marketplace with a mix of restaurants, bars and food stalls. Torvehallerne consists of two glass buildings and the surrounding outdoor part. It is pricy but high quality and lots of locals use it themselves for street food, delis, coffee shops, bars and of course all sorts of food and flower stalls. You can just go there to hang out, it is a hip place with lots of people.

A budget meal in a former church. The Church of Absalon has been renovated and changed into a place where people can share a cheap meal. People meet at 6 PM and sit at long tables and have a fixed menu that is around 50-60 DKK per person. Soft drinks are sold in the bar at a reasonable price. Danish Hotdogs are probably the best hotdogs in the world. In my opinion, and I have tried a lot. Order a roasted hotdog with everything. Denmark is a pork producing country known for our "Danish Bacon". You should try that also, but first and foremost - do not leave the country without tasting a "Danish Dog". Formel B has a Michelin star and is quite expensive, but it offers a really terrific French / Nordic food experience and has a cozy atmosphere in the posh neighbourhood of Copenhagen called Frederiksberg. Book at +45 3325 1066 Address: Vesterbrogade 182, 1800 Frederiksberg C Some 15 minutes on bike.
The restaurant Peder Oxe has a French inspired but also very Danish menu in the picturesque old part of inner Copenhagen called Gråbrødretorv. This large square or Piazza is indeed a hidded gem, and go there for lunch if you visit the Pedestrian Street or the Round Tower. Or even better - make a reservation at Peder Oxe for "Cake Sundays" where you can eat unlimited cakes from 2-5 PM. Address: Restaurant Peder Oxe, Gråbrødretorv 11, København K Cake Sundays: Every Sunday from March 8th.

Surrounding Neighbourhoods

There are so many great areas of Copenhagen, here are my favorites.
The Meatpacking District is a vibrant neighbourhood that in located in the district Vesterbro. It is one of my favorite places to go with an amazing variety of restaurants, take-aways, bars, coffee shops and Art Galleries. Due to it's history of a food market, they attract the types of restaurants with a joint ambition of quality food. It is probably every foodies' favorite place in town! If you want to treat yourself and don't mind paying a bit extra, this is the place to go. The area is subject to strict protection regulations, so they are not allowed to change the exterior, which is why everything has the white and bright blue colour combination and sometimes looks rough and out-of-fashion. My favorite restaurant is Kødbyens Fiskebar (A Fish restaurant with a limited choice of meat). You can see it in the picture. It has a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide (a special recommendation for restaurants with high quality and value for money). Their menu is about 700 DKK and worth every penny. Gorilla is also a really good Nordic/Italian restaurant with 10 servings for some 350 DKK, which is cheap for their quality. The French inspired Paté Paté is also a good choice - cozy, reasonable in price and a good menu. Address: Slagterboderne 1, 1716 København Bollywood served delicious Indian Food. Address: Slagterboderne 10, 1716 København mother is a great Italian place with really good and genuine pizzas, but you have the same original Italian pizza quality just opposite the apartment (Corsa Pizza). Restaurant Kul serves really good food, but I found the prices too high compared to alternative barbecue restaurants. We ended with a +2000 DKK bill for 2 persons for three small but tasty servings and a bottle of wine. If you want to spend +1000 DKK per person, go across the street and order the large menu with wine at Fiskebaren! Snacks and Take-Away: Warpigs is known for their Pork Roast Sandwich, which is a very local dish and great (maybe mostly for men as you get a lot of meat). They also have crafted beer. Address: Flæsketorvet 25, 1711 København V A quick and delicious Taco snack can be bought at Hija de Sanchez, which is a Taco Bar founded by a Mexican Chef from the top level Restaurant Noma. 3 little Tacos for 100 DKK is a good price, and the quality is the best. Address: Slagterboderne 8, 1716 København V John's Hotdog Deli is a must-try. Do enjoy our hotdogs - also from the normal food trucks - they are amazing!! I have never tasted better hotdogs anywhere in the world as compared to Denmark, so do eat a lot of them while you are here! Address: Flæsketorvet 39, 1711 København V If you are looking for a good burger - there are two gourmet options: Cock's and Cows (Kødboderne 9, 1711 København), and Tommi's Burger Joint (Høkerboderne 21-23, 1712 København). There is a tiny but wonderful coffee bar, Prolog, where you can have the best cup you ever tasted, and you are lucky if you find a place to sit.

Christiania was a social experiment that never closed. A group of hippies wanted to build their own autonomous anarchist community and moved into an abandoned military base in Christianshavn and refused to pay taxes. This was in 1971. Today, some 1000 people live in the area, comprising a community that still has its own rules and regulations that is independent of the Danish government. For many years, the place was infamous for open marijuana sale in “Pusher Street”, but together with the locals, the drug problem is almost eliminated. The small community offer culture and music events, and it is so unique that it is worth a visit. The Freetown of Christiania is in Christianshavn and you can get there by metro, bus or bike. Cars are not allowed. The main entrance is on the corner of Prinsessegade and Bådsmandsstræde.

Like Bryggen, it has the charm of being surrounded by water, and the same history of being inhabited by workers employed at the harbour, the local factories or other industry. It is also an expensive place to buy real estate. If differs though in the way that the houses are renovated gently (following strict regulation) while Bryggen is a mix of old and new. The old houses does not have the insulation and modern amenities, which make them too cold in the winter and too warm in the summer. But they are indeed very beautiful. Christianshavn has a large population of Dutch workers that in the 1500s was invited by the Danish King Christian 4th, which is why the Dutch building style can be recognized. To its north, you find Holmen where you have the Opera House.

Vesterbro is a charming place for students, artists and younger families, because the housing is cheaper there. Vesterbro is a good place to go shopping. There are the two shopping streets Istedgade and Sønder Boulevard. The latter starts at Halmtorvet where people hang out in the many cafés. Vesterbro is also where you find strange shops and used items. Besides 2nd hand shops you find a flea market near Øksnehallen on Onkel Danny's Square most Sundays in the summer season. Moreover, on Sønder Boulevard are occasional and very popular flea markets along the road. Long ago Vesterbro has some problems with drugs and prostitution. After many successful renovations, families, hotels and restaurants have moved in and changed the neighbourhood entirely. There is a tiny part of the upper main road, Istedgade (facing to the Central Station), where you can still find a couple of porn shops. Vesterbro also has many good and less expensive places to eat. It is perfect for a budget meal or to go for brunch as it is just on the other side of the harbour. Restaurants: Retro Gusto. Italian. Really good and plenty food and Gianluigi is a great host. 3 course menu is some 350 DKK. Address: Vesterbrogade 31, 1620 København. Tel: +45 33 21 55 55 Madklubben Vesterbro. Good value for money, known for their food and cocktails, people tend to hang put there. Address: Vesterbrogade 62, 1620 København V. Tel: +45 38 41 41 43 Baan Thai Isarn. Thai. Really nice with fair prices and good service. Address: Lille Istedgade 7, 1706 København V. Tel.+45 33 24 98 54 LéLé. Vietnamese, very fresh and delicious. Address: Vesterbrogade 40, 1620 København V. Tel. +45 5373 7373 Kebabistan. Kebab (Turkish/Arabic) in Pita bread or Durum. A tiny place on Istedgade 105, 1650 København V, where you have to stand up, but it is the best quality kebab. Their meat is a mix of beef and lamb, which is seldom to get. They also have a place in Nørrebro (larger with tables) and a small place in Amager also. If you are into Kebab, you should also try out Kösk Kebab in outer Nørrebro where you find plenty room to sit down (Close to Nørrebro Station, Frederikssundsvej 23, 2400 København)

This cool and trendy mini district is partly Vesterbro and partly Frederiksberg and definitely worth visiting for lunch or in the evening. It has a special vibe with a bit of French atmosphere with bistros, delis, wine bars and cafés. It is such a charming gem that attracts many people, even though it might be a bit pricy. Værnedamsvej also has a popular flea market; you can google the dates. It's 9 minutes away on bike. If you go by car, forget finding a place to park in the street! By public transport, take the metro from Islands Brygge to Frederiksberg Allé (change to the city line on Kongens Nytorv). The restaurants in Værnedamsvej are popular and you should book in advance. I have been on so many places to eat there and never had a real bad experience.

Amager Fælled is the largest park in Copenhagen and just beside the apartment. Run or go for a walk there. It used to be a military exercise area, but now it is a nature park with lakes and meadows and livestock where the locals go for walks or to exercise. It is also quite nice just to sit in the living room and watch the park area...

Bryggen has the best Ice Cream with a huge variety. They also make their own waffles, which is very traditional. It is simply delicious and a must-try!! The only bad thing about this place is that it is not open all year, but luckily it opens in the early spring (I think... but they have a homepage on Facebook where you can check).

Sports and Adventures

There are many places to do sports in Copenhagen. Here are my favorite places to go
Try out Copenhagen’s new year-round ski run; built on a power plant. It is 440 meters in length, which makes it one of the longest artificial ski slopes. There are three routes - varying from beginner and intermediate runs to a 180 metres black run with a slope angle of 45 degrees at its steepest to challenge both skiers and snowboarders. You can rent all the equipment there and have great fun for a couple of hours, but then as an experienced skier, you want more challenges. CopenHill has the world’s largest climbing wall (85 metres / 280 feet) and driving by; it is fun to see the many climbers, although only trained climbers are allowed to climb all the way to the top. The project is designed by Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and only some 4 km away.

Run or Walk the "Habour Ring" (Havneringen). Along the waterfront, there is an established 13 km long walking/running and cycling route. It is a beautiful way to see the inner harbour and the Port of Copenhagen. You pass historical attractions, everyday life and hidden areas. The harbor side is filled with contrasts and has everything from interesting architecture to home-built houseboats and crazy new creations going into the water. As you can see on the map, you can do the “Havnering” over two days, if you prefer. Take the part south of the boardwalk (Bryggebroen) in one day and the north side another day. If you, on the other hand are training for a Marathon, you can add a round tour of Amager Fælled Park which will easily add 10+ kilometers extra.

Open Air Ice skating is very popular during the winter - and available in many parts of Copenhagen. This is also much safer than going ice skating on a lake when the water freezes. In Christianshavn, you find the nearest one that is conveniently situated just beside sone food stalls. Address: Broens Skøjtebane, Grønlands Handels Plads, 1401 København K Skate rentals 50 DKK per hour. Open 10 AM - 8 PM from Sunday-Thursday and 10 AM - 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the season as it depends on the weather. Normally it is November-March. In Tivoli Garden's Winter season they also offer outdoor ice skating.
