West entrance is the best entrance to use since many of the most beautiful spots in the park are close to it. However it is also the most popular. On busy weekends, it can be slow getting into the park. Suggest going early before 9am or after noon to beat the rush. Sometimes it can be faster going in the long way through the north entrance (via 29 Palms).

Easy and short hike in Joshua Tree for the family. 1.5 miles, very little elevation gain, 45 minutes round trip. Especially great if it rained recently as there would be water in the old dam. It’s one of the best places to spot Big Horn sheep. Joshua trees, cool rock formations and even petroglyphs to explore.

Eating at Pappy & Harriet’s
Pappy & Harriet’s can get extremely busy, especially in the evenings when live bands play. If you want to go for dinner/night, a reservation booked well in advance is a must. They do take reservations over the phone. (760) 365-5956. Otherwise the best time to go just for food and drinks is when they open, at 11am, or between lunch and dinner from 3-5:30pm. We recommend all of their grilled meats. The chicken quesadillas are amazing too! Save some room for seasonal desserts.

What clothes and foot wear to bring
No matter what time of year you visit Joshua Tree, you want to prepare for a wide range of temperatures. Even in winter, it can be warm when you are in the sun. But after the sun has set, it can get cold even in summer. It is best to dress in layers so you can add or take off clothing as temperatures change. We suggest starting with a t-shirt as a base layer and adding on a long sleeve, a fleece jacket, and a down jacket as progressively warmer layers. As for shoes, bring a pair of slippers for inside the house, outdoor flip flops for warmer temps, and hiking shoes for outdoor activities.

The Galactic core of the Milky Way is a must see in summer
In the summer months you can easily see the galactic core of the Milky Way shortly after sunset. All you have to do is find a dark spot in the area. I have been photographing the Milky Way since 2008. Please check with me on ideal dates, weather conditions and recommended viewing spots.

Perseid Meteor Shower in August is Spectacular!
Every year around August 10-12 is one of the biggest meteor shower of the year.Just find a dark spot, lay back and enjoy the show. At its peak you can see dozens of bright meteors zip across the night sky, including some fireballs! Please check with Henry on exact dates and recommended viewing spots.
