In this beautiful new museum opened in 2019 you can admire a lot of real roman ships recovered in the last 20 years in Pisa. It is the oldest university botanical garden in the world, right in front of the Leaning Tower. There are ancient plants from all over the world and it has recently been refurbished and is now very welcoming.

The second most famous square in Pisa, this was the center of the political powers of the ancient maritime republic of Pisa in the medieval times. Integrated in the building of the library of the Scuola Normale Superiore is also the ‘Torre della Fame’ where Ugolino died for his betrayal narrated by Dante Alighieri in the Divina Commedia. The big building with the frescoes facade (Palazzo della Carovana) is where the Scuola Normale Superiore (founded by Napoleon Bonaparte) has now its historical site. Among others some famous alumni of this University are three Nobel prize winners (Enrico Fermi, Carlo Rubbia, Giosuè Carducci), two Italian presidents (Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Giovanni Gronchi) and recently a Fields medal winner (Alessio Figalli)

This very old church is located where centuries ago the river Arno flowed into the sea. A legend says that Saint Peter reached this site coming to Italy from Palestine but what it is absolutely true that in the IV century here there was already a christian building (you can see pieces of it inside this church that was built from the IX century). You can reach this place also by bike with the Bike Route del Trammino.

The main 'lungarni' are Mediceo, Galilei, Gambacorti and Pacinotti (the ones with the Ponte di Mezzo in the middle) and walking along the river here is really beautiful. You can see the facades of the ancient buildings (each very powerful family of the old republic had one building here). Especially fascinating at sunset time, the colours are often incredible.

Sunset from Ponte di Mezzo

If the sky is clear from clouds look for the sunset hours and go on the Ponte di Mezzo (the white one with single arch) to see the sunset colouring of red all the facades of the buildings on the river. It's unique!
