Walking distance to the best French Toast ("Mom's French Toast") -- ask for the Kahlua whipped cream -- and some pretty awesome pancakes. Local note: get one. I promise, one will be more than enough; the standard 3 is purely a photo-op:) Expect a good 30 minute wait in line unless you go early early or catch the afternoon lunch lull. But it's worth it!

Walking distance to a great dinner spot (the salmon is super, Cheebo Chop salad, and actually a super burger) with indoor & outdoor seating. Great vibe, friendly staff. A good "nice" spot for the family -- crayons and paper tablecloths help:)

You may have seen it in shows like Bosch. Fun Mexican vibe with live music and bustling bar. Good place to hang, grab a Margarita, a bite at the bar. It's always dark inside so feels like an escape; usually a bit of wait but not too bad.

More of a local spot, especially for late-night Sunset Strip post-drinking food runs. Super friendly, order at the counter and grab a seat to watch the bar hoppers go by or check out the endless billboards. Cheap and legit. Open late.

The Laurel Canyon music scene was a big thing in the 70s, a folk music (hippy) vibe, and the moment you step inside this hideaway a little ways up the canyon, you feel like you're stepping back in time. Sure you might see a star sneaking a private dinner, but more likely you'll feel like a star. Valet park -- pull in immediately after the little grocery store (on your right) right after the light at Kirkwood. Order the shuffle in advance:) Both the patio and inside are filled with charm.

Great place for brunch; awesome 1/2 off Happy Hour (4-7), just sit outside, chill and watch the TMZ Bus tour go by. Perfect pub atmosphere (Left door, restaurant; R door, bar), good mix of beer on tap and seasonal mixed drinks created by the bartenders. No attitude, just a great local spot you can come to again and again.

Toi's one of those classic Hllywd places that's been around forever. Sort of a dark, pop-art, eclectic mix of "we've seen it all before so grab a seat" Thai food, but you're primarily there for the kick-back and tell secrets vibe. And the fact that it's open until 4:00 am. And, no, it won't be empty.

Open late and always bustling. You may have to wait but not for too long, then pile in (good for groups) for some seriously filling tasty Brazilian-inspired food. (The half-salad, it's really all you need.) And hey, it's directly across from an iconic Strip Club so... there's that for a touch of pure LA-style.

Perfect for family style eating or grabbing a tasty bite as a couple. Been around for ages, super friendly, lot of regulars -- also has a bar with 6 or so seats with a TV for catching sports (with the sound off:); also a good spot to catch some hit-or-miss live entertainment -- hosts open mic nights, singer/songwriters starting out, etc. Just a great relaxed vibe.

Ah, just the best place to enjoy an afternoon bite outside on La Brea. Run by French owner, Edouard, the menu is eclectic but truly has one of the best burgers in town, a variety of croque monsieurs, perfect fries, great salads, all super delicious. Totally worth it, whether sitting outside or tucked in through the store in the back. "The store?" Oh yeah, this adjoins American Rag, a super hip store that's the best place to get a truly legit pair of designer LA jeans. Chic, hip, cool -- all of that and laid back at the same time. And make sure to order the Edouard 101, his own secret milkshake-like concoction (mint & coffee?) that's simply irresistible.

Drinks & Nightlife

Hopping little jewel of a spot on Melrose with a young Hollywood vibe and some awesome "mixologists" -- not a fan of the word but they deserve it:) Pretty young crowd, buzzing with energy, not usually a problem getting in but can definitely get packed. Cool for mid-week pop-ins with a date.

Long known as the rock-and-roll bar for the combo of art on the dark brown walls -- classic rock photos -- and the bands that stay in the hotel and hit the bar when they're in town. Great hotel (nice food in back, too; just walk through the lobby and past the pool; it's sort of hidden) and just an ideal spot to hideaway in the dark corners, either inside or on the secluded covered patio that allows guests/scenesters to smoke:)

Ok, yes, it's pricey but if you're looking for a special night that makes a memory, swing by the Polo Lounge for classic drinks or a late-night bite. Tucked away in the Beverly Hills Hotel, even with the renovation a few years ago, it's looked exactly the same since at least the '40s. Celebs? Sure, but it's about the priceless feeling of a professional bartender treating you right. Tonic mixer right out of your own bottle. And live piano playing dancing through the room. It's the real deal.

Walkable from our home if you're checking out the Walk of Fame / Graumann's Theater / etc. -- used to be called Lava Lounge back when it was filled with smoke/rs. It's dark and Hollywood divey and perfect for friends or lovers to sneak away to get into long conversations. Locals drop in and hang out, young and bustling, tucked away in a strip mall; recently switched to half-price drinks all the way to 10pm. When no-one knows where to go over the holidays because everything's closed? This is where they end up:)

Great atmosphere, small dark room with a DJ every night that gets pretty packed pretty much every night between 10-11pm. Along the strip of Fairfax where the "sneaker heads" line up all night for first dibs on new overpriced tennis shoes. Reasonable prices; great place to disappear into a young crowd and drink.

Ok, yeah, it's a restaurant but a restaurant with an always alive bar scene that often gets a line late in the week by 11. For some reason, people dress up a bit here (that's "dress up" by LA standards -- meaning more button-down shirts and more actual dresses than usual); a sharp hipster vibe that works with some pretty sweet drink specials. (Dinner on the patio is nice, too:)
