Food Scene

La Copine is a chic restaurant out in the middle of the high desert near Joshua Tree National Park. It’s a one-of-a-kind gem in a city with few culinary options. An east coast couple bought this old diner in the middle of nowhere to rehab it into a restaurant that is certain to draw crowds despite it’s remote location and odd hours. La Copine has a desert hipster appeal with its whimsical mural art, vintage piano, woven tapestries, and the old shiny airstream outside that houses pop-up shops. The food is an eclectic blend, from fried chicken to a duck-chicken mousse. Try the turmeric latte, it has a really deliciously unique flavor.

Drinks & Nightlife

Pappy's has great barbecue and live music. It's lively at night, and during the day it's usually really mellow. Both times are great depending on what mood you're in. If you go during the day check out Pioneertown, and old western movie set.

Sightseeing

Pioneertown was created for filming old westerns in the 40s. It has a lot of character, and they are now turning some of the old western homes into shops. It's also home to Pappy & Harriets, which has great live music and draws in loads of talent to perform out in the middle of the desert.

Arts & Culture

The World Famous Crochet Museum is a cute and quirky destination in downtown Joshua Tree. Shari Elf, a local artist, has created a whimsical world of crochet, screen printed clothing, patches, and other forms of art. It's a wonderful place to shop and take photos. I purchased a shirt from Shari's shop that says "What would Cher do?"

The California Desert is filled with "junk art." I find these places fascinating to photograph, and fun to see all the interesting things people build with found objects.

Integratron is a quirky and cute destination near Joshua Tree National Park in Landers, California. It's said to be situated on a powerful vortex of energy. Book a rejuvenating sound bath (meditation) far in advance, and hang out on the site at Hammock Village.

Parks & Nature

Joshua Tree is a beautiful landscape filled with it's namesake tree and large, overpowering boulders. It's a great place to camp, hike, and boulder. It's also a great place to rent a quaint cabin (Airbnb) and have a relaxing time off the grid and under the stars.

This is my favorite hike in Joshua Tree because of the expansive top-down view of the park from the 5,457 foot peak.

Once you reach the top of Goat Mountain, there is an incredible 360 view of the Mojave Desert. Grids of land to the south, and absolute nothingness to the north. What a view! Goat Mountain was mined for gold as early as 1914. There are still places along the trail where you can see the mine shafts, so the cut to the top of the mountain is well marked, but very rocky so watch those ankles! You pass a few old mine shafts along the way, and can even crawl inside one. Be careful because the rock is really loose so it can be dangerous. Most of the shafts have been filled in over time, either for safety or simply rocks falling in.

Key's View is the best drive-up vista in Joshua Tree National Park. From the top you can see the Coachella Valley and the San Andreas Fault. You can also catch a view of Southern California's two highest mountains, Mount San Jacinto and Mount Gorgonio. On a clear day you can see California's largest lake, the Salton Sea. This lookout is vast and expansive, I'd recommend starting at sunrise here, or ending at sunset. We ended our day trip here at sunset and caught it at the perfect golden hour. The entire valley was blanketed in a soft, warm glow.

49 Palms Oasis is a nice moderate short hike to a secluded palm oasis (you guessed it). The palm trees are clustered near an out of place spring of water in the middle of the arid desert. The trees look really out of place here among the cacti. They were originally planted there by miners to mark the spring. This trail is well marked, but has less traffic. It’s located in the park, but has no ranger station. For this reason you don’t need a park pass to park and hike, a huge plus for hikers without a yearly National Parks pass, or if you’re just passing through. Although this hike is technically within the National Park boundaries, you won’t see Joshua Trees along the path. As you start the trail, you’ll notice it features a lot of cool looking red barrel cacti. As you climb higher, you’ll get all panoramic views of Forty-nine Palms Canyon. As you descend back down you can start to see the palms coming up from the spring, a cluster of greenery rising up from large boulders. The palms offer great shade at the end of a hike. It’s a good place to bring a picnic to relax. Enjoy the hike!
