Local Restaurants

Excellent inexpensive local taco shop. Very unpredictible hours, but if you hear loud music, they are open. Delicious tacos.

Best breakfast in town so far, and the incredibly cheap massive serving of ceviche they give you will shock you it's so good. Everything is super cheap and delicious, actually, and their lovely back patio looks out over Colonia Santa Anita and the estuary. This is a small restaurant so don't bring a big crowd. This place is about the food. I think this is Trish's favorite place of all. Excellent view of la Colonia from the back patio. There is one waiter who speaks some English, but like most places, you can order by pointing at the menu if you don't have any Spanish. This place has a new, big sign since the photo was taken.

Good food, and good value... but they do tend to overcharge if you order in English (it's still cheap relative to US food prices, however). This is the only place I have seen Sonoran-style (CA style) giant burritos in Baja (usually a burrito means a small tortilla with a little bit of meat rolled into it). At Maganas, they are massive, and the breakfast burritos will last all day. They accept U$, and have a little hole in the wall bar with cheap margaritas and cerveza. This is a very close landmark to our place, so we frequently meet guests here to lead them in.

Super good pina coladas served in a pineapple for $10, with an umbrella and everything. Probably cheaper if you order in Spanish.

If they're not super busy, ask for the winery tour! http://www.alximia.com/en/content/16-vinicola This place has great farm-to-table food at a very reasonable price*, including a fair amount of food vegetarians will write home about, and we really love their wine, too. When they have it, their cheeseburger is absolutely the #1 best i have ever had (but they don't always have it). Also, people and dog friendly and I think most of the servers are gay. We love everything about this place. *what I mean by reasonable is way cheaper than anything similar in San Diego; about the price of a fast food meal in the US until you add in wine. But still more expensive than typical in non-tourist restaurants in Baja. Valle restaurants tend to be more expensive than anything elsewhere in Baja, but this one is super reasonable.

Best sushi I have ever had, caught that day and prepped by the super nice owner. Bring your own wine, or drink their microbrews. Look them up on IG if you want to see what you can get (and make yourself super hungry). You have to get off the highway & onto the free road to get here.

My fave seafood restaurant with super creative ceviches and never busy, as far as I can tell. The patio is situated right over a lagoon / tide pool where families come to swim, which is fun to watch and poke around in. Great food, service and view.

Not cheap but OMG so so so good. Another farm to table restaurant in a vinyard, with a lovely giant patio and open air kitchen and dogs running around. You might need a reservation if its a tourist season weekend, but probably not otherwise. Incredibly delicious food including many veggie options from a somewhat well-known young chef, plus they have wine from many local wineries, not just their own.

Great upstairs patio with dolphin view during the week, even nicer massive multi-level outdoor patio to the North open on weekends, with a bar, fireplaces and musicians. Pretty standard coastal tourist menu, but their seafood platter (called the asador which means BBQ more or less) is pretty outstanding, and they have excellent ceviche and tacos. They're super nice about making veggie fajitas (with carrots and mushrooms and other stuff besides the usual) if you ask nice. Recommend their sangria, too. Dish says this place has her fave breakfast machaca and eggs. Practically everyone here speaks English. If you look, you will see dolphins.

Microbrews and local wines, plus delicious seafood, mostly sushi (but there are some other things). Excellent salsa. Big giant patio, nighttime bands - we were there early on a Friday evening when it started filling up with San Diego college kids, so beware if that's not your thing (or be stoked if it is). But it was empty at 6pm so no worries. Giant patio, excellent peruvian style ceviche + lots more.

Helpful local spots

A small grocery store located at the turnoff from the highway to our dirt road. They have beer, junk food, and a little bit of real food, too.

And there is a nearby medical clinic behind Tacos Richi where you could probably be checked out if you got hurt skating. Though I think it's mainly there to serve local farm workers. Cash only at the clinic, but the farmacia might take credit cards.

There's lots of sketchy DIY skateables in the alley there, too, not shown in this photo. Best local artists shop boards and tees screened on site, plus Misa is the best MF we know. If you skate, you should definitely stop by and support this shop! There's also a lot of awesome restaurants on the very next block, Avenue Revolucion.

General tips for crossing at San Ysidro

First: avoid rush hour times. Many people live in Mexico and work in the US, so border crossing is most crowded going North in the morning, and South in the evening. Worst time to cross South: 3pm - 7pm, esp Fridays Worst time to cross North: 7am - 9am, and evening Sunday Worst time ever: before/after any SCORE off-road events in Ensenada. Our g-calendar has all SCORE events listed. Best times historically can be found at bwt.cbp.gov/historical (border wait times / historical / san ysidro passenger)

Crossing South

You will need ~$ 5 in cash ($80 in pesos) for tolls. If you're coming on I-5 through San Ysidro, it can be chaotic once you're in the border line, easier during less crowded hours. Right after the checkpoints, merge right as early as possible and don't be shy. You want to be all the way to the right to cross over the river when you see the big "Bienvenidos Tijuana" sign. The rest of the way is easy. If the bridge is closed, follow your GPS and look for signs that say Playas Rosarito and Ensenada. If there is ever a time when your GPS doesn't agree with signs, believe the signs.

Bring US CASH

Everyone accepts pesos, and most restaurants, vendors and stores from Tijuana to Ensenada also accept US cash at about 20:$1. Many expensive restaurants (but not all of them) accept credit cards, but don't count it. The machines are often down. It is customary to tip at least 15%. Since April 2022, gas is a LOT cheaper in Mexico. It seems that all gas stations accept cards, as well, though we always have cash backup in case the machines are down there, too. Tip them $1 if they clean your windows. ATMs are rare, expensive, often empty. Prices are usually cheaper if you pay in pesos.

Getting to Baja Surf & Skate

We're happy to meet you and lead you in if you please arrange in advance, but we're not hard to find - look for a big blue house on the hill. We are 1.5 miles on dirt roads, and the flat road can be challenging for low clearance cars during / after the rainy season in Spring. Arriving in daylight is ideal because you can see the big blue house from almost everywhere in the valley, which makes it a lot easier to find. Once you're on Calle Jose de la Zorra, look for a"Mara's Skill Center" with a blue skateboard sign under it. That's our turn! Then keep an eye out for the blue house.
