Maryland Heights hiking trails are for intermediate to expert hikers. There are a few trails to choose from, our favorite being the green and red blaze trails for an amazing overlook of Harpers Ferry. It is not something we recommend taking kids on as it can be rocky and harder, but well worth the effort. Leave yourself a couple of hours to complete this amazing trail and enjoy the one-of-a-kind views.

Something you can take the kids on since it is not too long or difficult, the Weverton Cliffs has some of the most rewarding views. Can be a little crowded on weekends so we recommend either getting there early or on a weekday, but well worth a trip!

Weverton Cliffs
Appalachian National Scenic TrailThis short hike is a part of the Appalachian Trail, another great historical must-see. Something you can take the kids on since it is not too long or difficult, the Weverton Cliffs has some of the most rewarding views. Can be a little crowded on weekends so we recommend either getting there early or on a weekday, but well worth a trip!

The Loudoun Heights trail is a great hike for someone who is looking to get a decent workout in. Features great views of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers as well as several overlooks where you can see Harpers Ferry and some amazing rock formations. Leashed dogs are welcome! This hike is about 6 miles uphill. It may be a little much for younger kids.

The Loudoun Heights trail is a great hike for someone who is looking to get a decent workout in. Features great views of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers as well as several overlooks where you can see Harpers Ferry and some amazing rock formations. Leashed dogs are welcome! This hike is about 6 miles uphill. It may be a little much for younger kids.

The Legacy Loop trail is a great stop for families! With several creek crossings, be prepared to get a little wet and muddy (but what kids don't love that?). An easy, well-shaded hike for those looking for a more relaxing outing. You will see a lot of birds and even some turtles near the water! Keep your eye out for some bridges if you want to avoid crossing in the water.

The Legacy Loop trail is a great stop for families! With several creek crossings, be prepared to get a little wet and muddy (but what kids don't love that?). An easy, well-shaded hike for those looking for a more relaxing outing. You will see a lot of birds and even some turtles near the water! Keep your eye out for some bridges if you want to avoid crossing in the water.

This historical 184.5-mile trail is traveled by thousands by bike or foot every year. The C & O, or "Chesapeake and Ohio Canal," had been used as a trade route for local communities to transport coal from 1831 to 1924, and is now used as a historical landmark open to the public. Many people love to travel the length of the trail, stopping to camp (or spend a night at Airbnbs') along the way. With beautiful sights and rich history, we recommend adding this to your itinerary.
