In the early 1800s Augusta’s proximity to the river and surrounding low-lying marshland made it uncomfortable during the hot Georgia summers.
“The Hill” was seen as a lush space to get away from the oppressive heat below - believing that the sand hills intercepted the westerly breezes and provided some cooling relief.
As Augusta merchants became more prosperous, they began to construct summer homes on “The Hill” spending their entire hot season in them, thus the origin of the name “Summerville.”
