Nestled in the woods of the southern coast of Maine, a retreat, a respite, a getaway. This historic house dates from 1890 but you’ll find the interiors a tad contemporary. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one an ensuite), a cook's kitchen, and an open plan creates a comfortable space for kicking back. And since we love the outdoors too, a private patio and large backyard helps make the most of the serene surroundings. The Downstairs at The Bracy House lets you recharge in a little piece of Maine.

Помешкання
This is a slightly different home than you’ll find in other parts of coastal Maine. We’re an architect and a founder of a felt company who have an affinity for the North Atlantic coast and contemporary Nordic design. Built by Horace H. Bracy in the nineteenth century, The Bracy House remained in the Bracy family until two thousand sixteen and underwent an extensive renovation. This two-family house has one two-bedroom, two-bath unit on the first floor and another two-bedroom, two-bath unit on the second floor.

This listing is for the first floor unit, which features a separate entrance and private patio.

COVID-19 NOTICE: We are currently only renting the downstairs unit or the entire house. If renting the downstairs unit, guests will have access to the laundry facilities and there will be no other guests staying at the house.

THE FLOOR PLAN
Wake up in the Maine woods. The Downstairs features an open plan including a living room, dining room, and kitchen with two bedrooms. A master bedroom features a queen size bed and ensuite full bath with shower with windows that wrap the room with views of the woods. The second bedroom also includes a queen size bed and a second full bath features a bathtub. Each bedroom includes a large closet with hanging and shelf storage so no need to pack lightly. The chef's kitchen includes a full-size refrigerator, range, dishwasher, and microwave with dinnerware and cookware. Movies nights galore in the cozy living room with LED TV and an Apple TV to stream to your heart's content. The design is practical New England with a Scandinavian spin. Artwork features seasides, swimming facilities, some rather dashing bearded men, and, oh, and we threw in a shot of Iceland for good measure. Looking for a little outside time? Lounge on a sunny chaise or get the grill going on the patio that's all your own (from May to October 'cause it does snow in Maine).

THE LOCATION
Need a quick getaway? The Bracy House is just a hop, skip, and a jump from Boston (1 hr 20 min), New York City (4 hr 50 min), or Montreal (5 hr 30 min). We're nestled in the quiet, wooded village of Cape Neddick but within a short drive (or bike ride) to the restaurants, shops, beaches, and attractions of the southern Maine seacoast.

THE AMENITIES
The little things make life better. Free Wi-Fi, high definition LED TV with Apple TV, bed linens and towels, luxurious shampoo, conditioner & body wash, fully equipped kitchen, locally roasted coffee & organic teas, central air conditioning, Nest thermostats and smoke detectors, and 24-hour check in via Nest x Yale smart locks are all included.

THE DESIGN
We're designophiles, we admit it. While we value The Bracy House’s long history, you’ll find the interiors decidedly contemporary. On vacations, we’ll be found in Berlin, Copenhagen, Helsinki, or Reykjavik and find that the southern Maine coast reminds us of these places with its natural beauty and urbane amenities. We have filled the house with furniture and objects from the likes of BluDot, Bob's Your Uncle, HAY, Heath Ceramics, Hem, Knoll, Marimekko, Menu, Muuto, Paper Collective, and Vitra (just to name a few.) Plus we’ve stashed some of our favorite books including the biographies of Kim Gordon and Yayoi Kusama (rock stars and artists don't live dull lives) along with cookbooks from Dan Barber and Magnus Nilsson should the culinary mood strike. And because you're in Maine, a few survival guides are thrown in to keep things interesting.

'CAUSE WE THINK MAINE IS PRETTY GREAT
We love Maine and so we've stocked up on local finds including Angela Adams pillows and Tandem coffee from Portland, Portsmouth's White Heron tea, books that feature Maine makers and authors, plus cookbooks from The Lost Kitchen and Salt Water Farm. Really want to get in the Maine mood? Maine Calling is a Maine Public Radio podcast worth a listen.

Доступ для гостей
Our property supports keyless access powered by Nest x Yale smart locks with 24-hour check in. The Downstairs allows private access to the first floor unit, the side patio with grill, and large backyard. (Please note that patio furniture and grill are provided from May to October only.) Other guests or the owners may be staying on the second floor.

Cape Neddick, Maine, Сполучені Штати

Maine's southernmost coastal towns—Kittery, the Yorks, Ogunquit, the Kennebunks, and Old Orchard Beach—are home to miles of sandy beaches sheltered along the rocky coastline of the North Atlantic, historic villages, and kitschy arcades and taffy shops. The Bracy House is located in the Cape Neddick part of The Yorks (the four villages of York Harbor, York Village, York Beach, and Cape Neddick) on the southern Maine seacoast. Our secluded little spot provides a quiet retreat but the hustle and bustle of Ogunquit or York are just minutes away. Distances to nearby towns:
1.2 miles (1.9 km) from Perkins Cove
1.8 miles (2.9 km) from Ogunquit Center
7 miles (11.2 km) from York Center
14 miles (22.5 km) from Kittery and Portsmouth

OGUNQUIT
Meaning “beautiful place by the sea” in indigenous Abenaki, Ogunquit was a fishing village and later an artist’s colony in the late 1880s. The picturesque village features the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, summer stock Ogunquit Playhouse, the shops, art galleries, restaurants, and ocean excursions at Perkins Cove. The Marginal Way, a coastal walking path along the Atlantic, connects Perkins Cove to the town center and Ogunquit Beach (one of the Top 25 Beaches in the United States).

YORK
Originally settled in 1624, York is the second oldest town in Maine. The town is home to three golf courses and the four sandy beaches of Long Sands Beach, Short Sands Beach, York Harbor Beach, and Cape Neddick Beach. Other attractions include Cape Neddick’s 1879 Nubble Light, hiking and mountain biking at Mount Agamenticus (affectionately known as “Big A”), the historic Museums of Old York, Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School, and renowned restaurants and lobster pounds.

KITTERY & PORTSMOUTH
Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire—both located on either side of the mouth of the Piscataqua River—are just South of the house. Settled in 1623, Portsmouth was once one of the nation's busiest ports and shipbuilding cities. Its picturesque streets are filled with Colonial, Georgian, and Federal architecture filled with shops and restaurants. Kittery Point is across the river and includes some of the region's best restaurants—in our opinion—along with quaint shops, a cozy (and tiny) bar, and two of the best bakeries around.

ELSEWHERE
Looking to go a bit farther afield? Portland is just a stone’s throw away or Boston—where we call home—is easily accessible for a day trip.

I like things that are thoughtful, modern, uncomplicated, inherently beautiful, and a little odd. I grew up on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Michigan and moved to New England when I was 23. Some of my favorite things are Finnish textiles, photography, good coffee, Nordic furniture, podcasts, Wes Anderson films, and warm cat bellies. I live with an architect and a black & white cat (both of whom are a bit finicky) in a small black cottage in Cape Neddick, Maine. After a 10-year career in interior design and historic preservation, I co-founded a little felt company called FilzFelt a few years back. We sell German-milled wool felt and felt products and were acquired by Knoll (an iconic American furniture company) in 2012. I still hold an integral role; however, miss the day-to-day of running a small business. When the architect and I had an opportunity to own and run an Airbnb in an old house in Maine, we jumped at it. On vacation, you'll find us in Berlin, Copenhagen, Helsinki, or Reykjavik and most often in the museums and coffee shops of these places. We are influenced by our travels and try to bring bits and pieces home with us (some even make it to our house in Maine.)
