Let's turn grocery store ingredients into restaurant-worthy dishes. Many of my guests are stunned to learn how simple it is to create these delicious dishes.

First, we'll introduce ourselves to break the ice. Then we'll go right into hands-on cooking! We'll start with making ricotta cheese in a very simple way with ingredients that you are likely to already have at home. We'll also create a simple tartine and "grown-up mac 'n cheese" using a few simple ingredients, including the ricotta cheese that you just made.

In the process, you'll have a chance to take a virtual tour of my garden here in California wine country to learn about culinary herbs and edible flowers. I will teach you ways to use the whey, which is a byproduct of cheesemaking.

Once we finish cooking, we will sit and taste what we created and talk about the recipes, the experience, and life in wine country. We'll even drink some wine together, and I will make some suggestions for you about matching wine with what we made.

This is an online experience. If you are prepared with all of the items listed above, you should be able to follow along and cook as we go. I will also provide you recipes via email after this experience.

  • Desktop or mobile device. Stable WiFi.
  • For the ricotta: 1 quart Whole or 2% milk, not ultra-pasteurized or shelf-stable. We have had success with lactose-free milk.
  • For the tartines: Bread (rustic is best), honey and/or olive oil and toppings such as herbs, dried fruits, smoked fish etc.
  • For the mac 'n cheese: 4 ounces dry pasta, grated romano or parmesan cheese, and coarsely ground black pepper
  • Measuring cups and measuring spoons

I have done prob 100 experiences and Juli and Walts are top 5 on my list. I want to shout from the mountaintops how easy ricotta cheese is to make. This class is perfect every step of the way: from the detailed prep list, to the class itself then ending with the fab recipes and plant information. The ricotta is simply fabulous and we learned about so many exciting ways to use it. The tour of Juli’s kitchen garden and suggestions of ways to use flowers has changed my cooking. Walt, her character of an assistant, helped the class run smoothly. Simply put, it doesn’t get any better than this!

This is one of the best experiences you can have in the Sonoma/Petaluma area! Juli and Walt were amazing hosts. We made ricotta and then learned how to use our ricotta in multiple dishes such as on tartines decorated with edible flowers from Juli’s garden and in a pasta dish. I loved Juli’s kitchen tips as well as the information on the herbs and flowers in her garden. This experience was well planned and well executed and I HIGHLY recommend it. Juli and Walt were also a joy to talk with, making the experience personable and special.

This experience is a MUST for anyone traveling through the Sonoma/Petaluma area. Juli is such a great teacher and both her and her husband Walt were incredibly kind! The cheese making is only a small part of the whole experience, from the garden tour (complete with edible flower snacks), tartine decorating, and incredible pasta dish- it’s truly worth doing! Juli offered up incredible culinary tips and even better company as both her and Walt were a joy to be around.

Absolutely amazing. I loved every moment of this experience!! Juli is so professional and so knowledgeable. I feel so fortunate to be able to learn from her the process of cheese making. This was a very informative and interesting cooking experience. My sister in law and I very much enjoyed the wide variety of tips and tricks that were offered. Juli is definitely an expert in her field so if this subject interests you at all you should definitely sign up for it.
