Wax batik, the batik from Javanese „ambatik“ means writing or drawing. It‘s a traditional textile technique which is still alive and famous at Indonesian island Java. Women „ibu“ are drawing ornaments with a special tool „tianting“ and hot wax on a piece of textile for many hours, weeks. Wax batik is used as a part of their traditional dress for a special ceremony until nowadays. These items were often handed from generation to generation, and become treasured as a unique piece of textile art, for the beauty inherent within each piece.
This wax batik workshop aims to introduce your work in a style that directly relates to the tradition principals and processes, that surround the creation of such wax batik piece. I will guide you through the selected workshop and provide all material for your usage. As a part of the workshop, I will introduce you examples of traditional Indonesian textiles, including pieces of mine wax batik collection as well as some pieces of contemporary batik. Many kinds of patterns and ornaments, traditional Javanese, floral or geometric, will be prepared for you, together with a selection of references which help and inspire your creative compositions.
We will work with cotton (size + - 50 x 50 cm or 40 x 60 cm). From that size, you can create a pillow, cover book, small bag, batik as a picture on a wall, some part of your future cloth. It's up to you!

I’m a textile designer and lector of textile techniques. I'm a co-founder of a textile studio GEOMETR, which is focusing on hand dyed and hand-woven techniques. Our atelier full with two historical looms, yarns and original materials in beautiful Art Nouveau house in the centre of Prague is a place for workshops as well. I’m focusing on teaching wax batik technique and shibori. I was studying wax batik in Java (Indonesia) for two years and 2012 I graduated on Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague in Textile Studio. I love to teach traditional textile techniques with a focus on a new aesthetic qualities and point out that traditional doesn’t mean just old/historical. Wax batik is very similar to Czech traditional technique - Blue print. In a few hours you could create your original piece of textile!

I booked this experience for my girlfriend. Linda has always shown to be a very gentle and kind person, keen on understanding my "organizational needs". About the experience, my gf said that it was perfect from the very beginning until the end. She thoroughly explained the procedure and helped them with everything they needed. As a result, she had a nice time and she has a beautifully decorated piece of fabric which is going to be soon turned into a gorgeous pillow case

Studio is in 4th floor without lift but in an Art Noveau house, so walk step by step up has some “aesthetic plus”. And you’ll have a wonderful view!
